What is the penalty of having a virus?

From my limited experience the penalty for having a virus was being plagued by pop-ups.
Intelligent Explorer search bar. unfamiliar icons on desktop etc. New to internet and downloaded about a dozen adwares. Cleaned them up then got a half dozen more. Anti-
Virus program was very helpful in detecting
viruses/worms.Directions for removing adware provided by anti virus manufacturer was very helpful. Not as difficult as I thought it would be. Good Luck.
