You are the QA manager for a medium sized software company and in charge of the testing and quality for a particular product. The product has several major components, including a GUI interface, a database, a data integration layer, and various components that perform the functions of the product. Due to stiff competition, regular releases of the product occur, each with added features and functionality. Which QA tools you should use, and how you would use them in combination to ensure quality of the product. As usual, cost and schedule are important factors. For the QA tools you decide not to use, explain why you would not apply them in this case.

Assesing your query i would like to conclude that first of all while your are preparing the testplan & schedule with the Software requirement document, you would have decided on what tools you would go for.
But here the scenario is being changed with that too added features which you would have not prepared for.
I would sugguest you that in such a frequent change in the requirement(added features)it is always better not to opt for any testing tool rather prefer manual testing with well documented test cases.
If you find a better reply please let me know

The First and foremost I can think of in the given context is Automation.

When you say product with database and server side stuff the basic framework or the functionality will change very rarely One will add features to the existing functionality. Also when you say that you need to release the product very offen Automation plays a very vital part meaning you can run the regression (Automated test cases) during the releases and avoid huge amount of resources in terms of man days and time for every release.

Having said that the GUI part I feel for any product should not be automated since it constantly changes during releases.

Since its a product you need to do this, if its a one time project thenwe cna do with the manual stuff.

Hope I am clear ..

If you are the responsibility of a product first of all you should be clear about the Ongoing feature. Also need to ensure that, whether the enhancements are related to the existing functionality or its different. If the enhancements are related to the existing functionality you can go for automation.Otherwise i can strongly prefer that you can go for Manual testing. And Competition is not based on the usage of tools. Its purely based on the Quality of the product which you are going to deliver.

Your requirements are as follows...

1. Several major components:
Sol - Spend more time on Integration testing.

2. Regular releases:
Sol - Go for regression testing.

3. Product:
Sol: Since regression of older components incremental and a must, employ a functional test tool like WinRunner or Robot. Cost effective on the long run.

From my many years of conducting QA for product releases cycles. I prefer to conduct functional and integrational testing of new functionalities. Then to do a full regression testing before release. I would prefer tools for managing  enhancements and bugs.
