Yes dogs can get colds just as we can.  If the sneezing continues longer than a week, consult with your vet.  I wouldn't give any medications with out calling the vet first.

Ever since I brought my dog home from the Grooming Shop my dog's been sneezing while she is in the upright position.  When laying down she is fine.
Does she have a cold?  Her nose seems to be hot also.

My dog started sneezing also, dry sneezing, eats well, plays, stops when laying down.
Nose not hot, seems normal in every way except the sneezing. Is there something going on here?

Look up Kennel cough on Google.  There you will find lots of info.  I had just addopted a six month old puppy from a humane society.  He has it.  He is on antibiotics and Robitussin MD.  One to two teaspoons depending on weight.

benedryl is good for dogs with allergies or if you are dealing with a dog who can't be alone (seperation anxiety) However, Please use caution when giving your dog or pup benedryl it works well but can be fatal if given the wrong dose. Always check with your vet.

My 10 month old beagle started sneezing when I came home from work. She would sneeze like 10 times in a row and then stops for about 5 minutes. She has all her vaccines, and it's not kennel cough. Could she have something up there? She's not lethargic or anything.
I'm really worried about foxtails, we have a lot where we live...and hounds are always using their nose.

My dog has been sneezing for a week.  I know how awful it is to sit by and do nothing. What we did is bring her to the vet..they flushed her nasal cavity incase there was a partical or substance stuck in her nose...(grass, pollen..)..give it a try.
good luck

I have a cocker/pek mix breed who also sneezes.  Sometimes more often than others.  As a puppy when ever she sneezed, I would reward her (positive reinforcement)for this behavior.  Over the years this grew into a family fovorite form entertainment because she would sneeze on command. This also had a positive impact on our dog as a self esteem builder.........So, maybe your sneezing dogs are simply seeking a little attention?

I called up my vet b/c my 6 month old yorkiepoo started with the sniffles about 2 days ago. The lady on the phone suggested we give him 3cc'sof triaminic (the baby syrup) I don't know how much 3cc'sare so i decided to give him 1 tsp of it. I'm not sure if this will work as of yet because I began giving it to him this morning.

I have two older poodles who began coughing and sneezing round the clock last year.  Over several months I repeatedly took them to the vet but he was "stumped" by the symptoms and medications he gave them never solved the problem (meanwhile costing over $500 in tests and prescriptions).

Finally, my older dog became so ill I thought I might lose her.  In addition to constant coughing, gagging, and sneezing she had developed a nasty eye infection that filled her eye with mucous till I thought she'd lose her eye.

In desperation - after trying all proposed solutions on various websites (Robitusen, Benedryl, etc.) I finally found THE ONE THING THAT ACTUALLY WORKED.

I use Colloidal Silver as it kills bacteria and viruses on contact.

I first tried dispensing it from the eye-dropper into the dogs eyes and mouth.  However, I've had greater success using the small spray bottle of Colloidal Silver and spraying their eyes, nose, and inside the mouth, tongue and throat two times a day.

I now also give them a "swig" of Colloidal Silver morning and night - it flows through their system to kill off infection in the bloodstream.  This has additionally helped my older dog with her arthritis problems as it kills infection in the joints.

It took several days but this has FINALLY given my poor dogs (and me) relief after months of suffering.  I'm diligent about continuing the dosage with them as they can have a relapse.

Fortunately this is a fairly inexpensive cure I buy Colloidal Silver for $10 in eye-dropper and spray bottles at Vitamin World (GNC and health food stores also carries these).

I hope this helps someone else and their pet.

I just adopted a dog from the SPCA.  Generally he is ok but when he sleeps I can hear his breathing.  Sounds really congested.  When he wakes up he sneezes a lot for about 2 or 3 minutes.  It gross.  a mild amount of yellow green snot goes everywhere.  I think he caught something at the SPCA.  I have an appointment with the vet tomorrow.  I hope it is just a cold.

My new puppy has had all his shots, when he went in to be nuetered, he came home with a cold, runny nose, coughing and now my other dog seems to be coming down with it. I am making some chicken soup and have some antibiotics and will pick up some benedryl and robatussin I hate taking them to the vet all the time, that is where they get most of the problems.. I want a more natural healing now.  For the person with the dog with the bumps? Gagging and sneezing? I would get the bumps checked out, first try putting neo sporine with pain releif on the bumps and see what happens. If they go a way in a few days, dont worry. Keep an eye on the sneezing and gagging. good luck.

The vet told me that the Benedryl is good for dogs with colds and allergies.  You must use childrens Benedryl and only use half a dose every 5-6 hours. It works wonders!  If you have a puppy, please take the dog to the vet first for the correct dosage.

I have a lab cross. I recently had to board her at a kennel. About 3 days after getting her home she developed a sneeze. She's had it now for approximately 4 day's. It does seem to stop when she is lying down, but the other night while lying down she lifted her head a bit and had trouble breathing. It seems she's congested , so I am concerced of it turning into something worse. what would be a good treatment for this sort of ailement?

To the pitbull one.  He may have food allergies. Try switching to a high quality food like nutro or science diet if he's not already on one.  Regarding the sneezing, my grandmother had a dog who started sneezing all the time.  She took Pookie to the vet and they found a quite long piece of grass in her nose.  She was fine after they removed it.

Regarding sneezing, snorting, runny nose, etc.  My two-year old bichon began this stuff about two weeks ago.  She ate well, acted a bit lethargic, etc.  After a week I took her to the vets.  She indeed had a respitory infection, not serious, but he admininstered an antibiotic, and explained that canines can indeed get colds.  Don't wait more than a week to have your little one (or  big one) checked out.  Hope this helps.

My two labradors had symptoms of sneezing and reverse sneezing after starting a new day care.  The symptoms would be better after laying down. I thought it might be a cold or allergies, but the vet diagnosed them with nasal mites.  This is missed by many vets.  Check into it.  Treatment is easy! Shortly after starting treatment, sneezing has become less frequent.

The problem that most of your dogs may be facing is Kennel Cough. My dog has it also. It is cause in all seasons. This happens because when people touch the dog, all of their germs are transferred to that dog. Just think, that dog has licked a humans hand, now the germs from the human are in the dog. That is the answer.

Pharyngeal Gag Reflex is a dramatic, rapid inhalation and exhalation of air through the nasopharynx. Dogs may do this when they have a mild irritation at the back of their throat. Often confused with seizures or gasping for air, it is usually a harmless event.

Reverse sneezing is not really a health problem but it is very common in Toy breeds and owners should be aware of it. Characterized by honking, hacking, or snorting sounds, it usually happens when a dog is excited or after drinking, eating, running around, or pulling on a leash. The dog will usually extend his neck while gasping inwards with a distinctive snorting sound. Usually, gently rubbing the throat of the affected dog will help stop the spasms.
