Hi Adrian, have you heard of BUNAC they are an organisation that help people get visas to go to different countries for all sorts of work. They will take an agency fee off you, I don't really know any other way of getting a J1 visa without an agency, I would very much like to know and keep my pay for myself. however if you do not find a way to travel without an agency I suggest Bunac.org

Hi everybody there !
I was okayed for j1 visa and then I decided not to go. I would like to tell u all that you can live in US for a period of 3 years on j1 visa provided your employer recommends your services each year. you will have to pay to sponsoring company every month(about $500). after a period of 6 months you can bring in your family too on j2 visa. your spouse can not work without work authorisation in US. you all will be non resident aliens there and will live tax free.
