I have a JRT/beagle mix (about a year old) we adopted him and he is very hyper of course.  he barks a lot.  he gets out of the house sometimes and we have to go chasing after him because he wants to play with other dogs as he did in his foster home.  he loves to play and we can never get him back.  we do, but we have to actually catch him or one of our neighbors catches him.  we cant get an invisible fence because he will go after anything and wont come back in after he knows he will get shocked.  We cant get a femnce cause he digs.  And we put him on a lead, but he takes that out of the ground.  HELP!  Will we ever be able to let him out or is there an answer?

If you've got a clothes line or any trees you can tie a line and put him on a runner and pulley.  These systems allow more movement, and he can't pull the trees out of the ground!  I have a JRT/ Beagle, and I do this sometimes, but make sure to keep an eye that he doesn't get tangled.

I have JRT/Beagle mix as well!!  He was quite a handful when he was younger too!!  He is now three years old and has chilled out quite a bit!!  Hang in there with him.  Maybe age will mellow him.  My "Chippie" would dig under the fence and run like a wild man too!!!  He chased cars, people, you name it!!  I would have to literally "dive" on him to catch him!!  I just made him a strictly indoor dog take him out on his leash.  I watch him in the yard while he takes care of business.  I guess it is just in the blood!  His mama was  the same way.  I think your dog will do fine after he gets a little age on him!!  Good Luck, B~

I have a Beagle/ JRT mix too and he is about a year old right now. The advantage of those dogs is that, although, they get into tons of trouble since they have such a high curiousity they are really smart. This means you can teach these dogs things quicker and they will pick it up quicker. First of all, let the dog know who is boss, play with him alot give him a ton of love but let him no that a NO means a no. Teach him commands and be sweet with him but be very firm, the last thing he wants to do is make you upset. He should be learning in no time.

I have a Jack/Beagle too.  I also have a large beagle.  What one dog doesn't think of the other one will.  I have a chain link fence with a canine hot wire (electric) running across the bottom; it stopped the 'great escape'; ran a wire across the top too (my beagle can jump 4' straight up from sitting).  Now, it stays off.  I can run the wire anywhere I want (on or off), and neither one questions whether it works.

We have a JRT/Beagle mix, and like everyone else says, he is so curious once he sees something he takes out after it.  We fenced in the yard and that solved the problem for us.  He digs occasionaly but not deep enough to get out.  We put a dog door in our screened in back porch so he can come and go as he like(he's an inside dog).  Just hang in there.  He's probably the best and most loveable dog we've ever owned.

I have a JR/Beagle mix, 14 months old and male.  We got him from the SPCA two months ago.  This dog has been a real challenge.  He has locked me out of my running car and figured out how to open his cage so now I have to put a lock on it.  He has eaten his way through a plywood pen and chewed the clasp end of his invisible fence collar.    We have two German Shepherds and what a difference.  Anyway, Buddy ran away a few times and we put in an invisible fence in.  What a life saver, after about a month he is on his own successfully for about two weeks and doing great.  It helped with house training also.  We used to walk him five times a day and still he would go in the house.  Now he hasn't had an incident since being able to go out on his own.  With proper training the invisible fence is the way to go!

I also have a JRT/beagle. When we ngot her we had a fence, she tried to dig out as well! But our "easy answer" was to simply put large rocks wherever she began to dig. This way, she got tired of digging and not getting out, so now she's simply given up.

I, too, have jrt/beagle mix!  I got him at a yard sale-funny story.  Anyway, do any of you notice that when your doggie barks-it sounds like two dogs?  The howl of a beagle and the yap of a jrt?

BTW-we had tied our pup out on a line (as someone above suggested)  and it worked out quite well. Just make sure the line from the dog to the lead line is not too chewable!

The Jack Russell/Beagle mix is actually called a Jack-A-Bea.  Our male is 10 years old and is the smartest, and most well-behaved dog we have ever owned.  He was never hyper, but I guess it depends on the genes of the parents.

I have a 10 mo old JRT/Beagle mix.  He's EVERYTHING you all have said.  He's indoor at night, but during the day I've tried a few things: 1) a 7x13 pen [he actually UNWOVE the chainlink and got out]  2) A tie-down [this has worked for the last 5 months, but I actually setup a shuttle between two tie downs.  it seems to keep him from pulling them up and he has only had one tangling episode. although even one is too many when you worry about your little guy]  I'd LOVE to get him an invisible fence so he can run but sounds like it may not be very effective w/ this mix.

We have a JRT/beagle mix that we inherited.  He was a handful.  We also had a problem getting him to come in.  He would run up to you like he was coming and then jump and run.  He chased cars.  I bought a shock collar and used it.  He was only shocked twice (on high).  He is 2 1/2 now and he comes on command and doesn't even look at cars when they pass.  The funny thing is  that he loves the shock collar!  I put it on him occasionally when a new situation arises and he goes bananas when he see it and stands perfectly still so I put it on him.  The only thing I can figure out is that before the shock collar he had to be chained and he hated that.  He sees the collar as freedom.

Simple... take your dog for walks! Lots of walks!

He just has too much energy to burn and you have to help him with it.

I too have a JRT/beagle mix.  The first year was a complete nightmare!  My cute little pooch destroyed countless, precious items, despite enormous effort she always found a way to escape, and urinated and defecated all over the house, repeatedly, often sneaking into dark, away places to do her thing.  I am an absolute animal lover but I was at my wits end and decided to find her a new home.  That night, I couldn't sleep because despite all her terrible habits, she was indeed sweet and was incredibly gentle and without aggression to my two young girls. So, I decided to give her a few more weeks.  Unbelievable, as she aged, the bad quirks eventually worked themselves out, and now I have a 2 1/2 year old dog, and perhaps the best dog I have ever known.  Her only remaining bad habit is jumping on visitors, but otherwise she is awesome -- sweet, loving, totally house trained, eats only her food and her toys, nver tries to escape (she sits willingly on the front porch) and even sleeps in bed with me and my husband (ordinarily not a dog lover as such).  So, my advice is, stick with it.  If your dog is anything like mine, that extremely rough year was worth the effort.  "Dolly" is now a fully fledged member of the family and we love her endlessly.

I have a Beagle/JRT also,he is a madman! Daily training w/long lead helped a great deal, increasing the distractions to simulate a more natural environment over time. It is hard work, but they are smart dogs and he will get it. As a result of this basic method of training I am now able to hike with him off the leash. The exercise chills him out and makes the training smoother too!

For Brady's owner:  Put up a fence and then place wood, bricks, stones anything hard sheet of metal, etc. around the base of the fence.  If there is no way to dig, there is no way out.  In memory of BUTTON 3/11/07  THE BEST JACK-A-BEE ANYONE COULD DREAM OF!
