To calculate MPG (Miles Per Gallon) for automobiles, we need do the following. Need to note down the mile-meter reading (m1) when we go for the gas-station. We must fill the tank full. Next when go the gas station again, note down the mile reading again (m2). Fill the tank full again and note down the gas filled (g2), this time. Obviuosly you must have used g2 gallon of gasoline between day one and two, when your automobile must have travelled (m2-m1) miles. Hence, MPG is (m2 - m1) /g2
[Note: if you want to extend the duration more, say, for say, 10 gas fill-ups, MPG would be (m10 - m1) / (g2 + g3 + ... + g10), when we consider, you filled FULL tank at least on the first day and 10th day]

Put gass in you tank and then set you trip botton and then go untill you need to refill and see how many miles you have gone with that amount of gas you put in. It will be diff if you drive in town vs driving on the highway.

I know that to figure out miles per gallon you fill up your tank, then after that tank you take your miles and fill up again and divide. My question is... do you force gas in your tank after it clicks off or take when the gas pump clicks it off as "full"

Thanks

for how your car is handling after older age:

get a notebook.
get gas.
write down how may gallons purchased
write down starting mileage, reset odometer
drive.
the next time you get gas, 1st write down current mileage.
subtract difference.
divide by number of gallons originally purchased.
the number is the miles/gallon currently

lather. rinse. repeat.

Ways to improve mileage: fuel injector cleaners, don't speed, coast when appropriate, maintain your engine, etc.

I have a question. My vehicle sadly gets 8 miles per gallon when towing. I am traveling in the mountains 217 miles. Does that mean it will take 27 gallons for this trip

This is how you calculate your average mpg. Be sure to know the capacity of your gas tank. Fill your tank, when it hits 3/4 of a tank reset the trip counter on your odometer. When the tank hits 1/2 full take how many miles you drove and divide with the fuel capacity of your tank divided by four. For example, if my tank hold 20 gallons and I went 100 miles between the fuel gauge hitting 3/4 and 1/2, I averaged 20 miles per gallon.
