I believe that in a long past episode of Frasier, it was explained that Maris did not take on the "Crane" last name. My Girlfriend seems to remember that as well. Yet in tonites epsode, (Maris Returns - 04 November). The radio reports that Maris Crane was arrested for murder. was that a blooper or were we mistaken?

Maris always had the last name "Crane".  In the early episodes Daphne would always ask Niles how "Mrs. Crane was doing".  And in the episode when Frasier and his boss (Bad boy & Dirty girl) were caught making love over the air, Maris was so embarassed to be related to him that Niles reported her changing the name on her stationaery to "Maris Crané" (with an accent).

After Frasier teaches a man in the cafe an etiquette lesson people start to dislike him when Niles comes to visit Frasier he says Maris has changed her name from Crane to Crane' with a circumflex above the E
