When a spell is countered, can it be re-countered, and if so do you have to counter the spell itself or the opponent's counter card?

If your friend plays a card and you counter it with a counter spell, he/she can counter your counter spell with his/her own counter spell and then if you have another counter spell in your hand then you can again counter your friends counter spell.

There is also another possibility. Your friend can let your counterspell resolve, countering his spell. Then he can announce another counterspell targeting your original spell. This can be meaningful when using certain counterspells that only counter certain types of spells. Like say you have a remove soul our something that you could cast after your counterspell gets countered... you could not use remove soul on his counterspell, but you could on his creature you tried to mana drain only to be counterspelled.... or whatever :)
