it started in th 1600. originated from the idea of pictures on the temple walls. then this man name Hokusai started to change the style of art in those days.
then osamu tezuka was very impressed and very much influenced with Disney that he decided to do one himself. "astroboy"
manga started then and spread through anime and gamings. now manga has been one of the largest industrial source of entertainment throughout the world

It started with monks making picture scrolls that followed in series, the had no writing on them. That was in the early to mid 1600s. After a while, people started making erotic wood block illustrations that came in series (don't ask). In 1730 or something like that, this one guy dicided to make a book of these pictures. Then, a buch of people did. Thus manga was born. Manga was even moderately popular in Japan BEFORE Tezuka came along. He just came around right after the government stopped sensoring animes.

During and after the Second World War, there was a man by the name of Osamu Tezuka. A factory worker during the war and an aspiring doctor, Tezuka was heavily influenced by the early animation of Disney and the Flesicher Brothers in the West. As a child, Tezuka found solace and enjoyment in his father's projector reels featuring characters such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. He also found popularity and respect among his peers for imitating the style of the cartoons he saw, by drawing ones of his own. It was this early love of animation that would fuel not only his future success, but also, ultimately, the birth of anime and manga as we know it today.
The period of the 1970's saw changes in the Japanese animation medium that began to split it from its previously-influential Western sources. The groundwork was now laid for the animation field in Japan and certain series in the 1970's highlighted things that were to become the foundation of the "uniqueness" of the anime medium.
As the 80's came and went on, Anime began to kick into high gear. By this time, the Japanese animation medium was a national mainstay and an international cult fan favorite (known as "Japanimation"). Though the few anime series that did make it onto international shores were either very vaguely known, such as Speed Racer, or horrendously cut for public consumption, such as Robotech (made from bits and pieces of three original related mecha series in Japan, with drastic changes in storyline), the medium continued its rise.
Today, anime is alive and well, but also continuing to evolve and grow. In Japan, new series are shown on TV networks every day, with seemingly no end in sight, and well-established studios such as Toei still stand among newer animation studios to create new and exciting anime series. Though in 2001, an economical recession seems to have hit Japan, the anime medium is chugging along nicely, at least from an international point of view. The continued release of anime in Japan ensures its life even in the face of economic hardship.

Great question. Hard to answer.
The "experts" of anime& manga classify anime as being Japanese style of drawing in multi-media cartoons. In this case, it started in 1917, as the Encyclopedia of Anime points out.

Now, on the other hand, we can look at a more specific deffenition. Let's say anime isn't anime unless it was broadcasted on television as a series. In this case, the very first anime was "(The) Three Tales," not Astro Boy, as many have thought. I forget the year, but it was VERY early considering.

There was also the first full-length anime feature (not a series) broadcasted, the name of which currently alludes me, I believe it was in '45.

from what i can tell,it started in Japan ages ago in the 6th and 7th centuries (if not earlier). some monk dudes made scrolls that they used as calendars and there was loads of different symbolic pictures that represented time and they got decorated with pictures of animals like foxes and stuff that acted like they was people. The pictures told stories and these were the first art that could we could call manga because of the style that they were drawn in. simple line drawings with blocks of colour. they used to be drawn on temple walls too. i think this style of drawing was named "Manga" by some Hokusai dude

The first three Japanese cartoons were one-reelers of one to five minutes each, in 1917. Animation of the 1920s ran from one-to-three reels. A few were imitations of foreign cartoons, such as the Felix the Cat series, but most were dramatizations of Oriental folk tales in traditional Japanese art styles.

Anime actually got its start with such cartoonists as Osamu Tezuka who began by experimenting with western cartoon styles of makers such as Disney. This is the man credited as being “The Father of Anime and Manga” and has created many famous works including one of his most famous, “Astroy Boy.” The anime industry began to evolve during World War II and by the 70’s it began to separate from its previous western style into what it is today. By the time the 80’s rolled around Anime had become a mainstream thing in Japan and was slowing beginning to grow on an international level as well.

anime and manga both started before the war but it only started to get to be known after they took some ideas from the Americans some time after the war. They then made it their own and made better anime then America (I'm pretty manga has always been theirs, but the idea probably came from comics)
