Three, the question has nothing to do with angry, hungry, or any of the many other obscure words that end in 'gry', it is a simple question asking you what the third word in the sentence is. As you take tests, remember this

If "language" is the answer then perhaps the English language is declining. Haven't teachers ever told us to read the whole sentence before answering a question? by just reading till "...the english Language.." and ignoring the "...that end in "gry".", you are jumping to conclusion with that answer.
It would be totally different meanings to:
"There are three words in the English language"
and
"There are three words in the English language that end in "gry"."

I think the answer is 'gry' for a couple of reasons.  First, it is a word which is mentioned earlier in the riddle (hence the phrase "if you listened very carefully, I've given you the third word."

Secondly,  when it comes down to the final answer, gry appears again: "What is it? _______gry?"

I think the real riddle is why the person who made this up uses the word gry enough in daily conversation to say that "EveryONE knows what the third ONE means and what it stands for. EveryONE uses them everyday!"

the original question in 1975 was somewhat like this
"There are only three words in the English language, all adjectives, which end in "-gry." Two are "angry" and "hungry"; the third word describes the state of the world today. What is it?"

The answer would be gry, meaning the world is small... since probably around that era was the cold war.. and with the cold war going on the world, was probably consider small.. since a couple of nukes could destory it so easy... just my opinion

The answer is language.  Come on people brain teasers/riddles are made to confuse you.  It the answer stood out it wouldn't be a brain teaser/riddle.  It goes like this:  There are three words in THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE that end in gry. Even if you read on there are still only three words in the phrase THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE.  The rest of the riddle is just to throw you off. So the third word could only be LANGUAGE.

The riddle is flawed/badly defined.
For people who said the answer is "language", you are wrong unless the riddle states:
'There are three words in "the English language"...'
Also, whoever said the bit about the rest of the sentence nullifying the possibility that the first phrase gives the answer "language" is right. Read the question.

Respect to the guy who found obscure words ending with '-gry'. It's fun to be technically correct.

for the riddle to make sense, it's supposed to be stated:
Think of words that end in g-r-y. Angry and hungry are two of them. There are only three words in the English language. What is the third word? The word is a common word, one that people use everyday, and if you were listening carefully, I have already told you what it is. What is the third word?

Now it makes sense for the answer to be "language".

Words that End in Gry
Without a doubt the most common question we receive from visitors to Fun-with-words.com is about the famous "-gry" puzzle, so we've decided to put the story of this curious puzzle on the site. Here it is.
The puzzle is essentially this: There are three English words ending in "-gry". Two are "angry" and "hungry". What is the third one?

There is no other common word ending in "-gry", so how did the puzzle come about? It first appeared in print in 1975.

Perhaps the answer to the original version of the puzzle was meagry or aggry (as in "aggry bead"). There are over 100 obsolete words that end in "-gry" (see below), and these two were in use until fairly recently. However, since there is no longer a real answer to this, modern versions of the puzzle have turned from being puzzles to being riddles. There are perhaps as many as a dozen versions in circulation - each with a different answer!

Words Ending in Gry
We shall look at each of eight versions of the "-gry" puzzle, and their answers. (Some of these are discussed by Chris Cole in "Wordplay: A Curious Dictionary of Language Oddities".)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Think of words ending in "-gry". "Angry" and "hungry" are two of them. There are only three words in "the English language." What is the third word? The word is something that everyone uses every day. If you have listened carefully, I have already told you what it is.
The answer is language.
It is the third word of "the English language". The question needs to be spoken, otherwise the quotation marks give away the trick. This version apparently originated in 1996.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. "Angry" and "hungry" are two words in the English language that end in "-gry". "What" is the third word. The word is something that everyone uses everyday. If you have listened carefully, I have already told you what it is.
The answer is what.
The question states that "what" is the third word, then it asks for the third word. Again this version needs to be spoken to be effective.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. There are three words in English that end in "gree." The first two are "angry" and "hungry," and if you've listened closely you'll agree that I've told you the third one.
The answer is agree.
It is a phonetic version of the riddle, asking for words that end in the sound "gree," but tricks people into thinking about the letters g-r-y by giving the two examples.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. There are three words in the English language that end in the letters g-r-y. Two are "hungry" and "angry." Everyone knows what the third word means, and everyone uses it every day. What is the third word?
The answer is energy.
The question asks for a word ending with the three letters g-r-y, but does not stipulate that they must be in that order.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. There are at least three words in the English language that end in g or y. One of them is "hungry," and another one is "angry." There is a third word, a short one, which you probably say every day. If you are listening carefully to everything I say, you just heard me say it three times. What is it?
The answer is say.
The question must be said in such a way that the word "or" sounds like the letter "r". Once more, to be effective it is crucial that this version is spoken rather than printed. This version is first known to have appeared in 1997.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. There are three words in the English language that end in "-gry." Two words that end in "-gry" are "hungry" and "angry." Everyone knows what the third word means, and everyone uses them every day. If you listened very carefully, I have already stated to you what the third word is. What are the three words that solve this riddle?
The answer is I am hungry.
The question asks for three words that end in "-gry", but does not say that they each must end in "-gry."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7. There are three words in the English language that end in "-gry." One is "angry" and the other is "hungry." Everyone knows what the third one means and what it stands for. Everyone uses them every day. And if you listened carefully I've given you the third word, what is it?
The answer is three.
It is the third word in the question, and the rest of the question is irrelevant: a red herring designed to put the solver off.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8. There are only three words in the English language, all adjectives, which end in "-gry." Two are "angry" and "hungry"; the third word describes the state of the world today. What is it?
This is the (presumed) original version of the puzzle from 1975. The possible answers (if obsolete words, names, and hyphenated compounds of "angry" and "hungry" are allowed) are plentiful. Most of the 124 listed below were in the 1933 edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, and all have appeared in some major dictionary of English:

Three means three, and stands for three. Also it states, 'i've give you the third word. What is it?' The third word of the whole thing is three!!

There are three words in the English language. What is the
third word? Everyone knows what it means and everyone uses it

Answer: "language".

This puzzle has circulated widely on the Internet for some

answer.

The original question was something like this:
"Two words that end in -gry are 'angry' and 'hungry'. There are three words in the English language. What is the third word? It's a common word that everyone knows."

Never the less, if the key phrase was "the English language that end in 'gry'", the third word into the phrase is still 'language'.

And 2much4u, although there are more than three words that end in -gry, only angry, hungry, and gry would be used today.

(And I'm only replying to this because it was one of the first results Google pulled up when searching for "There are three words in the English language.")

The third word in the second sentence is hungry. We use this word on a daily basis.

"One is hungry, and the other is angry. What is the third word?"

I agree with Anh that the question is incorrect. But I think that the question should read "Think of words ending in -GRY. Angry and hungry are two of them. There are only three words in the English language. What is the third word? The word is something that everyone uses every day. If you have listened carefully, I have already told you what it is." the answer to this correct version of the question is language because in the phrase "the English language", language is the third word.

OK THE REAL QUESTION IS
Think of words ending in -GRY. Angry and hungry are two of them." Ignore those two sentences. They are there only to throw you off course. (And it worked, didn't it?) What's left is the actual riddle itself: "There are only three words in -the English language-. What is the third word? The word is something that everyone uses every day. If you have listened carefully, I have already told you what it is."
The key is the phrase "the English language." In this three-word phrase, the third word is simply the word "language." Get it? "Language" is definitely something that "everyone uses every day"! Without that quirky little twist, the puzzle would be just another trivia question, not a riddle THER ARE LOTS OF WORDS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ENDING IN GRY!!!!!!

By now, seasoned chain-breakers will recognize that it doesn't matter if you send this riddle to5 people... or 50 people, nothing will automatically "pop up" on your screen. An E-mail does not have the capability of registering how many times you forward it, let alone make something happen once you hit a certain number. The magical pop-up hoax often appears in the form of a joke or riddle absent a punchline or solution (like the old lady at the grocery store hoax).

So, what is the solution to this riddle? As it's written above, the riddle makes little sense and has no solution. If you wanted to stretch at it, you could claim the answer was "three" ("the third word" in the message), but this was not likely the intention of the riddle's creator. That's because the version above is the result of years of mangling the riddle's structure and meaning until it just doesn't make any sense. However, when written properly, the riddle has a definite - and somewhat clever - solution:

"Think of words ending in -GRY. Angry and hungry are two. There are only three words in the English language. What is the third word? The word is something that everyone uses every day. If you have listened carefully, I have already told you what it is."

The answer is "Language." The first two sentences are unrelated to the riddle and only there to throw you off. Thus, the core riddle is "There are only three words in "the English language." What is the third word?"

Fact is, there are many more than three words in the English language that end in -gry, though none of them are nearly as common as "angry" and "hungry". Nobody seems to know how the current form of the riddle came to be (for instance, why "ONE" is capitalized), but there are at least 6 other variations floating around. Most of them make as little sense as this one. Break this Chain!

"Think of words ending in -GRY. Angry and hungry are two of them. There are only three words in the English language. What is the third word? The word is something that everyone uses every day. If you have listened carefully, I have already told you what it is."
The answer is language.  In the sentence there are only three words IN THE ENGLISH---LANGUAGE!!! Thats the third word.  SO it should be language. There is no word called gry or onegry   Other words that end in -gry are bowgry, hogry, hangry or aggry.  How often do you use these words?

What is the third word.

Actually, many words end in -gry, including gry itself, although all but angry and hungry are rare, foreign, obscure or obsolete. The most common "answers" are aggry, a burial bead from Ghana, puggry, a scarf worn around the neck in India to protect the head from the sun, and anhungry, an obsolete form of hungry that was used once in one of Shakespeare's less-popular plays (Coriolanus, Act I, Scene I, line 209); this association with the Bard is enough to earn it a place in Merriam-Webster's Third New International (unabridged)Dictionary of the English Language.
"But that can't be the answer," you groan. No. It's not. There is no answer.
The puzzle is WRONG. "It's a fraud, it's a fake," says Will Shortz, who is the puzzle editor of the New York Times and the host of a puzzle segment on National Public Radio's Weekend Edition (NPR, 11/10/96). The actual truth is that
NO other common English word ends in -gry! It's a trick question -- and the trick, at least in some versions, has been lost. Word-puzzle fans and reference librarians have been trying for years to track the question's history to find the original answer. But to do that we need to know what the original question was. And there are several different versions in circulation purporting to be the original.

Research from the Oxford English Dictionary, Simon & Schuster's Webster's New World Dictionary, and the G.C. Merriam Company gives us this list:

aggry: A glass bead found buried in the ground in Africa. A word of unknown origin. Seemingly always used attributively, as in aggry beads.

braggry: A variant form of braggery.

conyngry: An obsolete dialectal variant of conyger, itself an obsolete term meaning 'rabbit warren'.

gry: The smallest unit in Locke's proposed decimal system of linear measurement, being the tenth of a line, the hundredth of an inch, and the thousandth of a ('philosophical') foot. Also the grunt of a pig, an insignificant trifle, or a verb meaning to roar.

iggry: Egyptian colloquial Arabic pronunciation of ijri: 'Hurry up!', brought back after the First World War by members of British and Australian forces who had fought in Egypt.

mawgry: from Old French: being regarded with displeasure.

meagry: Having a meager appearance.

nangry: A variant form of angry.

podagry: Dodder, or the condition of a plant infested with it.

puggry: A variant form of puggree, a light scarf wound around a hat or helmet to protect the head from the sun.

Actually, the riddle is often misquoted when repeated and this time is no mistake

The riddle is meant to read, "There are three words in the English language.[period]  Angry and hungry are two words that end in gry.  What is the third word?  Everyone uses it every day.   if you listened very carefully, I've given you the third word."

The idea being that 'language" is the third word in "the english language"   Everyone uses "language" every day, not the word itself, but the words they represent, their own languages!

The answer is not another word that ends in -gry, that's a red herring.

This is an old riddle, and only really works when spoken.  However, the text is incorrect, it should be written like this:

Think of words ending in "gry" - angry and hungry are two.  There are only 3 words in 'the English language'.  What is the third word?  The word is something everyone uses every day.  If you have listened carefully I have already told you what it is.

Therefore the correct answer is: Language

Or, there is another answer, as it doesn't say that the letters GRY must be in that order....

therefore the alternative answer would be: Energy
