A chihuahua female is in heat from 2 - 3 weeks twice a year, the same as other breeds.  And yes, from what I have been told, they do smell bad.  They also can leave stains where they sit or lie down, from the discharge that comes from their 'female parts', similar to a human female during one particular week of her monthly cycle.

If you are not planning on breeding, please have your female dog(s) spayed.  They will be much happier and healthier.

If you are planning on breeding, please reconsider.  Most female chihuahuas are too small and delicate to breed, even the most experienced professional breeders lose the mother dog and/or the litter sometimes.  Also, the cost of proper veterinary care during the pregnancy is far more than you can recoup by selling the puppies.

I know nothing.  I am looking for answers.  Please, help me.  Sister Rose is a white female, never been spayed, Chi, 1 1/2 yrs. old, I got her a kitten 2 wks. ago, this Sunday found kitten was nursing on Sis, Sis started to "mother" a rubber dog toy she's had a long time, attacked kitty for kitty coming near rubber "baby" called Vet told to give away kitty as it put Sis in a neurotic behavior, where she now, for the past 4 days, walks around whinning crying carrying that old rubber dog toy, trying to nurse it, won't be without it, doesn't eat well, just "mothers" and clings to me all day with her "baby."  Please, what do I do to get her to realize the toy is not a pup, she never had pups, never will, needs to forget about it.  Any help?  J-Declan@excite.com  Please!
