My boy also runs around like a mad man. He does it more late at night. I think he is just getting out a little energy. As long as he is not getting hurt I let him go.

I have two males.  They don't run up and down stairs but, on occasion have been know to run like nuts around our coffee table.

I realize this sounds a bit extreme, but, in my readings on the breed several have mentioned that there may be an ancient connection between the Shih Tzu and cats and my male cat will on occassion run like crazy up and down our stairs.

The bottom line is if he's not hurting himself I wouldn't worry to much about it.  If it just annoys you take him for a good walk once a day, he may just be letting off some steam.

my 6 month baby girl also plays crazy.  I have heard it's characteristic of the breed.

well hi the problem may be that he is not getting enough excercise and needs to burn off energy my dog used to do that to until we started to take him to the park to run around. if you don't have a park around, then let him run around in the backyard ( make him go to the washroom first though trust me on this one!!) also you should play with him maybe he needs company!?!? good luck!

My dog Iris-kis-kis does the "crazy run" through my apartment. I keep my living room door open and bedroom door adjacent to the living room and he does loops around the coffee table, chairs then into the bedroom and back. He usually does four laps then lies down. I always thought it was his way of getting exercise, or wanting me to play with him. As for the stairs, I can't see how it would hurt - since Shih-tzus need to walk up hills to strengthen their hind legs in order to even out their gait.

My dog does the same thing. We call it "tazing".  I read that it is normal for Shih-tzus to run around "like a freight train is chasing them", sometimes as much as twice a day.  It seems to be fun for them and gives them exercise.  It is also fun to watch. However, be still while they are doing it so they won't run into you and get hurt.

I don't have a Shih-tzu but I have a mutt. She does the same thing, she loves to run, very quickly I might add, around our coffee table, dining room table, and back again. She does it all the time and I cant imagine how she has that much energy.

My new puppy maltese does this around our condo and it's very entertaining. I'm guessing that she is happy and excited and this is her way of showing it.

i'mso relieved. i just brought my little samba (shih-tzu) home last week. she runs like crazy twice a day too. i thought maybe something was wrong with her, but she seems normal in every other way.

one thing though, before eating, she will take a piece of kibble over to her wee wee pad and eat it there. she will do this two times before eating her meal at her bowl. what's up with that?
