I was cooking on top of the stove with a glass Pyrex baking dish browning some chicken when it blew up into tiny pieces of glass everywhere. I was very lucky I didn't get hurt but it was very scarey. Do you have any idea why this should of happened?

The same thing happened to me. I was cooking cookie bars in the oven in a green tinted casarole dish at 375' , the timer went off and i was just about to open the oven when i heard this big bang and the oven started to shake. It had blew up in the oven. My 2 year old daughter was standing in the kitchen with me when I was about to open the oven. it could've severely injured her. I am still looking for an answer myself on how this happened.

Glass bakeware designed to be used in the oven is not usually able to with stand the direct heat of stove top use. Also, cheap glass or glass with flaws (ie cracks or bubbles) to small to see can react in this manner. I have never had a dish explode but I have had them crack in pieces.

That is strange as Pyrex is known to be able to go from the hottest to the coldest temps without and issue. If I had to guess you had a small crack in the dish and didn't know it. Glad nobody got hurt. RE Guy - http://www.suburbanhousehunters.com

http://www.answers.com/topic/pyrex indicates that, starting in 1998, they stopped making Pyrex with the 'good' glass (borosilicate).  They started making it with cheaper glass under the "World Kitchen" name http://www.worldkitchen.com/

you can't use the recent stuff on the stove or in broiling

The old Pyrex was apparently fine on the stove.
