National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 72 is the National Fire Alarm Code and refers to smoke detectors and smoke alarms to be wall-mounted not less than four (4) inches or more than twelve (12) inches from the ceiling. Also, always install any smoke detector/alarm in accordance with the manufacturers specifications.
