what is the difference between lossless and lossy

To my knowledge lossless means the file will remain fully intact when you receive it. Do this for picture files if you anren't'going to print them off or just don't really care about the quality. Lossy means that you lose part of the file in the process. I don't know a whole lot of technical things about this but you probably don't want to send a video file in this type of compression.
