A pit bull's jaw is no different from a lab or a shih tzu's jaw.  No dog can lock their jaw.

Oh my god!!!

You know....some people know so little about dogs before they buy one....They shouldn't even be allowed owning one!!!! Why in the world would a pitt bull's jaws be any different than any other dogs???...It's the people That don't train their dogs well that give the pitt bull a bad rep!!!!...They are just as sweet and loving as any other dos...if not more!!!

I grew up with a pit bull who would babysit me. Now I have my own 1 year old pit bull who I rescued when he was 6 weeks old(I also have a German Rottweiler) and he is a wonderful dog. He gets along well with most other dogs and is incredibly loyal to me. I have never had any problems with him.

No offense seriously, but if you had to ask if pit bulls have locking jaws then you don't need to own one.  Since I would question  the reason you got the dog in the first place if you believed this.

Don't listen to gypsykorea.  From the first time I saw a pit bull at 4 years old I was told that they could lock their jaws.  When you hear people say that they can for so long and so often, the more pertinent question, is why wouldn't one believe it?  I don't fight my pits and I don't train them to attack.  And even without seeing the name "gypsykorea", the insinuation that believing a common story and having unlawful intent are equivalent would lead me to believe that gypsykorea has to be a woman.

A pitt bulls "lock Jaw" is a myth if it were true then any time the dog tried to eat it would lock up and the bone structure could not handle it.  They do however have a very intense bit and this is fuled by the power and intensity of the dog.

First of all, pit bulls DO NOT have locking jaws. Latin Thug- my pit bull, Kain, can hang from the spring pole for hours, but this does not mean his jaws are locked. Ballaof_03- if a pit bull is engaged in a dog fight or hanging on to something, water will not work to seperate. Maybe sometimes it will if the dog is not completely excited. However, if the dog is in a fight or any other scuffle and highly excited, the only way to break his hold is a break stick. This is a device that responsible pit bull owners have on hand at all times. Especially if you have multiple pits. Even if you don't fight your dog's intentionally, if you own more than one, there is always the potential for a dog fight.

NO PITBULLS DO NOT LOCK THEIR JAWS. i HAVE A 2 YEAR OLD BLUE PIT WHO HANGS AND HANGS BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN HE LOCKS HIS JAWS. IF PITS WANT SOMETHING THEY GO FOR IT AND THATS WHY THEY CAN HANG FOR A LONG TIME. I DO BELIEVE A PIT WILL BITE HARDER THEN ANY OTHER DOG AND THATS ONLY BECAUSE OF THE MUSCLE IN THEIR JAWS.

"To the best of our knowledge, there are no published scientific studies that would allow any meaningful comparison to be made of the biting power of various breeds of dogs. There are, moreover, compelling technical reasons why such data describing biting power in terms of 'pounds per square inch' can never be collected in a meaningful way. All figures describing biting power in such terms can be traced to either unfounded rumor or, in some cases, to newspaper articles with no foundation in factual data." Furthermore, Dr. Brisbin states, "The few studies which have been conducted of the structure of the skulls, mandibles and teeth of pit bulls show that, in proportion to their size, their jaw structure and thus its inferred functional morphology, is no different than that of any breed of dog. There is absolutely no evidence for the existence of any kind of 'locking mechanism' unique to the structure of the jaw and/or teeth of the American Pit Bull Terrier."

it is a fact that pitbulls have the most powerful jaws of all dog breeds where they can exerts 2000 psi of pressure when they bite. the lock jaw is not actually a lock, instead it is due to the fact that their jaws are so powerful they tend not to let go. however, pitbulls are fantastic dogs and are less aggressive than labradors. as a matter of fact i own a dobermann and my dog has never been attacked by a pitbull it has always been attacked by a retriever or a hound. it is not the dog that is the problem but the IRRESPONSIBLE OWNERS that think the point of having a pitbull is to intimidate.

No bull dogs cannot lock their jaws, as previously stated they just have a good bite and determination to hang on to something.  I have two Staffordshire Bull Terriers and they have that same determination.  But my male dog will let go on my command, he can have an off day when he will not let go someone's ball that he has stolen no matter how much I command so we end up going home with it. But they have never attacked cats or people, he will take a growl at a passing larger dog, a territory thing I suppose, but he can be a bully with our cat by nudging it along with his nose or just the stance he takes with it. It's bad owners who make bad pets.

It is a scientific fact that any breed of dogs are physically unable to lock their jaws. The reason you couldn't get the dog to let go is because they are extremely determined to not let go. It's a game to them! And if you still couldn't get the jaws open after you "shot and killed him" he probably died in shock and died determined to not let go. Your friend should have socialized his pit bull early or not owned one at all. It's irresponsible people like you and him that help give them their bad rep. Media feeds on bull crap stories like yours.

If any of you really knew anything about pitbulls then you would know that pitbulls do not and never will be able to (lock)their jaws. But they were originally bred for gameness, meaning that the dog will preserve his bite, despite injury. In other words the dog doesn't want to let go, by choice. It's the dogs temperament. Read up!!

WHAT A LOAD OF BOLLOX!!!
Pit bulls, staffies - both terriers & dogs, DO NOT LOCK THEIR JAWS. THeres also NO eveidence to say which dog breed has the strongest bite. Also, if you have a dog, of a certain breed that is medium build and a dog from another breed that is huge compared to the breed, might it not be possible that these 2 dogs have the SAME amount of force on their bite? to determine which dog has the strongest, hardest bite, a survey must be done, over a vast number of dogs of that breed.

other than that BOLLOX! dogs jaws dont lock.. unless they have the medical condition LOCKJAW, cos they dident get their tetnus shot!

For those of u that own a pitbull, pitbulls DO NOT have lock jaw it is a fallacy the reason they hang on so tightly is they don't want what they have to get away just like people do they hold fast to what they want. As for a lot of owners of pitbulls take them to a qualified vet & they will tell you the same thing they don't lock jaw.

I would like to clarify the debate over a Pitt bulls ability to "lock" their jaws.  First let me introduce myself, my name is Dr. Scott Mason, DVM, VMD, I am a veterinarian and specialist in dog behavior and science in Detroit Michigan.  Detroit has one of the nations worst reputations for gaming pitt bulls and I am the head of the Detroit council for animal science.  Pitt bulls "CANNOT" lock their jaws nor do they have a stronger bite than other dog breeds.  The reason for the tenacity and the pitts ability to not let go of their subject is do to the fact that the pitt does have more than 3 times the tolerance for pain than any other dog breed.  This pain tolerence can be contributed to the dogs purpose a s a gaming dog and years of unethical breeding.  So, while it may appear that pitts have a lock jaw it is scientifically impossible for that statement to be true.

Grrr...you god damn people are so gulable! No dog can lock their JAWS!!! PERIOD. About hanging on that thing. Thats called a spingpole. Its excelent excersize for a pitbull so don't go dissing it. From my short experience with pitbulls in parks I'm in love. They are so loyal you would not beleive. They live to please there owner. Now most people would say labs are some other "gentle dog" are the best but pitbulls are just the best. Its more likely that a lab will bite someone rather than a pitbull. You want to diss pitbulls, do it somewhere else. They don't need your negative opinions.

Pit bulls as well as any other dog are going to find any way to defend themselves. If that means that they tighten their grip on another dog then so be it. It is not intentional it is just to prevent themselves from being hurt. I own a red nose pit as well as a brindle pit and one of them is a 8 week old puppy and the other is 2 year old and they are just fine around one another. Also my friend has 2 pits and my two year old and one of his dogs have gotten into a fight but it was not because they are pits it was because they both wanted the same bone. Pits are beautiful lovable dogs and i do not feel it to be necessary for people to say the things they do to make people think otherwise. Until you own one you should not make any type of accusation about the animal. If someone approaches you and in your mind they are going to try to inflict pain upon you what are you going to do? Defend yourself by trying to double the pain on them.

Wow! It amazes me to see how ignorant people as a race can be! I have a pitbull named Buddy, and he is 3 years old! Before my husband and I rescued him, we did extensive research on the bread! Thru reasearch and REAL life experience we have come to know and truely believe this is a wonderful breed! The breed does not have "lock-jaw"!! From the very beging of this dogs existance they were bread to have unmeasurable loyalty to its owner! They were bread to NOT let go when in bull fights! Its in their genetic make-up! Out of sheer determination and loyalty to their owner, they would die before they let go! You have to be a strong person to raise this breed! Do your reasearch with actual facts! dont base your answers from a bunch of nobody's who havent a clue! Good luck!

They actually don't "lock" their jaw. I've seen a fight with our dog, Coors(12 yr. american pit) get in a fight. Their was blood but nothing serious. If he really "locked" his jaw, the skin would have been torn off. To seprate them we put a hose in his mouth so he can't breath and he lets go. Once our other pit, Ruby(3 yr. red nose pit) got in a fight with another pit named Booda who was very territoial. Just last night Coors and Ruby. It wasn't really nothing, just biting and growling. Wow, these people are exactly what gives these dogs the poorly, and unduly deserved name of "agreesive dogs" Pitbulls have no special "enzyme" that kicks in when they want to "lock their jaws" The sheer determination and strength of the muscles in these dogs jaws do help them hold on, but it is not a lock-jaw situation... I swear... some of the uneducated....

Pits do not and have never had lock jaws. It is called "extreme tenacity" (or willingness to please the owner) that powers the long bites. They do have very strong jaws but, not the strongest. The strongest jaws (for a dog) are found on the Dogue de Bordeaux. The sometimes have a head over 30 inches around. (The size and power of 2 Pits heads). Please just read and learn people. Also any retard with "Thug" in there username should definatly not own a pit. People like that is what has ruines every breed brought to America in the past. These are people who are worried about how they look (with a cool dog, or like a thug ect)  That they forget about what is best for the breed. Besides half of you probably have 80 lbs Pits that if you know anything they are obviously not all Pit in the blood. A real Pit should only max out at about 55 or 60 lbs and even that is big for a real Pit. So start reading dumb azzez.

"it is a fact that pitbulls have the most powerful jaws of all dog breeds where they can exerts 2000 psi of pressure when they bite."

INCORRECT!

There is no scientific way of determining the strength of a dogs bite, nor has there ever been a study comparing the bite "power" of different breeds.  The APBT has no more strength in it jaws than any other dog of comparative size.  Also, 75% of a dogs biting strength comes from its backlegs not its jaws.  Any intelligent and responsible APBT owner will tell you the first thing you do to get your dog to release it's hold on something is to immobilize its backlegs, then to use a breaking stick.  Anyone who thinks a APBT can lock its jaws, bite harder, or any other stupid myth about the APBT, is a idiot and does not deserve to be around, much less own such a wonderful and caring family pet.

Pit Bulls can't lock their jaws.  They can, however, opt to grab and not let go.  But if you can't break your own dog's grip, there's something wrong.  Get a breaking stick, and learn how to use it.  I've never not been able to break a dog off something, by command or by force.

And you know what you get when you throw water on two Pit Bulls fighting?  Two WET Pit Bulls fighting.

OMG, I can't believe that you people have a computer to post this insanity but you can't work a search engine to get smart. NO THEY DO NOT LOCK!!!! Pit bulls are very strong willed, of course they are also physically strong, but there is absolutely no way whatsoever to test the "PSI" of their bite, and determination should NOT be mistaken for "locking jaw".
Google it you people, read a book, grab a brain.

First Hyena's are NOT in the canine family.  Second You can not compare a Hyena's bite to a dog because dogs can not compare to them, hands down no chance.

Second this whole "lock jaw" issue is ridiculous.  One breed of dog would not be anatomically different than the rest.  This issue is no different than people that panic when you tell them you feed raw meat to a dog.  "Oh my god! Dogs can't eat raw meat they will get sick and die!"  Ridiculous, a little common sense if you were graced with it would tell you otherwise.  The pit bull is no differently functioning than any other species of the canine world.

First of all, "rednose" or American rednose isn't a breed of pit bull.  It just means that your American pit bull terrier has a red nose.  It's exactly the same breed as those with black noses, or blue noses, or whatever color noses....
Second of all, there are no actual studies on pounds per square inch of jaw pressure in any dog breed.  The 2000 psi in the APBT is a myth.  APBTs bite no harder than any other breed.

The thing that makes the APBT special is their determination, their drive, their heart (spirit, whatever...).  They don't give up.  Ever.
From the Pit bull Rescue Center website http://www.pbrc.net/faq.html:
"Pit Bulls are just another member of the canine species and have the same jaw structure as any other dog. If they had a special enzyme or other physical mechanism that allowed them to lock their jaws, we would have to reclassify them as a different species. However, Pit Bulls do seem to have an above average amount of determination for things they are interested in. In fact, they were selectively bred to never give up. Their focus may be barking at squirrels, fetching rocks or sticks, but whatever they do, it's done with a great deal of enthusiasm. If they happen to grab onto something they don't want to release, it can be quite difficult to extract it from them.

In addition, in the heat of a fight Pit Bulls tend to grab a hold on their opponent and shake as any canine would do with a normal prey. A breaking stick may be needed to break the hold. This may seem like a locking jaw effect, but it's only a strong determination to win the fight."

NO! PitBulls or APBT do not have LOCKING JAWS. But people take the biting strength as locking jaws. In the 1700's bull-bating was a sport. The APBT dog or bulldog had to pen the bull by the nose and never let go. If he did the bull could kill him or injure the dog. This is how the instinct to hold on their bite and not let go came to be. No dog has locking jaws! I have 3 APBT'sa red/red nose male, black brindle male & a black/white female. I have had a lot of APBT's& not one has had locking jaws but they do bite very hard. I know because of yard accidents.

Pit bulls do "locK" their jaws just like terrier fan said.  When they bite really hard and shake, what they are doing(without knowing) is working their muscles, and just like every other animal including HUMANS when u work uR muscles they tighten rip and swell up.  APBT have the same skull and jaw structure as other dogs in similar size their muscle mass is quite greater though. So when their muscles swell up and get strained it makes it harder for the dogs to loosen up their bite, therefore creating a "lock jaw" effect.------and for landlord Red noses are truley a unique breed, i myself have an old family red with papers. I guarantee you cant find one as easily as u think.  try doing some research on OLD FAMILY REDS.

There jaws do not lock, they where just breed to hold on to animal no matter what is happening to them(be it death). For you people who think there dogs jaws locked because there jaw muscles where tight, try to bite a piece of meat an hold it for 15 min. Your jaws will be the same way.

This is not true. Pits do lock their jaws. When people say pit bulls "lock" their jaws, they actually mean that they don't let go if they bite, which is true. It is a proven fact pits have by far stronger jaw strength than any other dog. I have owned top of the line fighting dogs,(which i never made fight) and none of them was more aggressive and powerful then pit bulls. i have for a long long time studied them, and they are stronger than ANY breed in the k9 world. it's a fact.

Pitbulls jaws dont lock, and yes they do bite harder than mastiffs and rottweilers. They have 200 pounds of pressure behind their jaws that says the same thing....Pitbulls were bread for gameness, which means once they are set on something they dont give up. Same goes with when they are fighting. Their jaws dont lock, but they were bred to not let go. And yes pittbulls are dog aggressive, and anyone that owns one and refuses to believe that should have their dog taken away. I own 2 and am fully aware that no matter how sweet they are, there is always potential for them to get aggressive with another dog. Its in there genes, so you cant ignore it.

this is a QUOTE for a new's paper clipping !  "THE FACTS

A Pit Bull bite is three times worse than a Rottweilers.
A Rottweilers has 800psi (Pounds Per Squire Inch Jaw Pressure).
A Bull Terrier has 1200psi,
A pit bull’s bite force is 2000+ psi plus.
A Pit Bull does not lock its jaw as do other dogs, but it lower jaw scissors back and forth to rend flesh from the bone.
Pit Bulls are bred from Staffordshire Bull Terriers – Gaining their incredible musculature  - and Bull Mastiffs Gaining a Cold-Hearted lack of emotion and Phenomenal resistance to pain "

Raushasowner, you're full of it. Pit bulls do NOT have locking jaws, as so many people have stated. You saw nothing with your own eyes, you're just trying to be a thug and impress.

An "american red nose" is a certain bloodline of pit bulls, yes, but it isn't a separate breed.

Carlitos, you're wrong as well. There is no proof that a Pit Bull has any more jaw pressure than any other dog of comparable size. That is purely myth. There is, as the post above stated, no way to measure PSI of dog bite pressure. It's not possible.

Ballaof_03, you're foolish if you believe that statement. Water won't work if a pit is determined to hang on to his 'opponent' or 'prize'. They are very determined dogs. When they want somethin, they hang on to it.

Pits do not bite harder than any other animal you could not possibly reach this conclusion without testing all 500 plus breeds of dogs. All dogs bite differently in different situations.Really do you think that a small pit could out bite a huge rot? i will give you the website to look at. Realpitbull.com go there learn about your dogs. That just happen to be the best and most lovable dogs of all Pit Bulls.

its true that pit bulls of any kind DO NOT have locking jaws. but to say it has the strongest bite pound for pound is unfounded. a study has never been done to support that, and they would have to test more than 500 breeds to be sure, for all we know the pomeranian might have the strongest pound for pound bite. and itd be impossible to even do that test because dogs bite down at diff pressure in in diff situations. im goin into breeding em soon and i have been studying pits non stop for almost a year now and ive been a fanatic of pits for 6 years. ill be damned if i dont know a lil som'nsom'non the subject.

Pits cannot lock their jaws. Their skulls have been studied and are similar in all aspects to any other canine. After all they are all the same species and basically alike, yet all canines can be bred for temperaments, and looks to a certain extent. Pit bulls, however, do carry a lot of muscle in their jaws. This is why they get the really broad face. Because of this they can clamp down much tighter, and hold on longer than most breeds.

My puppy Jackson is a 12 week old red nose pit bull.He is the sweetest and smartest puppy. We have only had him for 3 days now.He is being crate trained and doing great on house breaking. We have a 135 pound black lab also. The 2 of them play around playing tug of war with his toy.I have 4 cats also and he doesn't hurt them at all.We are consistent on his socializing with kids and cats and other dogs so he wont be harmful to them.We give him plenty of love and attention and many dog things to chew on.I hope he stays the loving little dog he is now.His parents are both very friendly and playful.Never has bitten anyone or even show any aggression towards anyone.I hear different stories about pits and their good and bad behavior but isn't it all about how they are raised?

Can pit bulls lock there jaws?  In a word NO.  The locking jaw myth is a carry over from the old pit fighting days.  Extremely game dogs would grip their opponents and refuse to let go.  To an uninformed individual this would appear as if the dogs jaws were locked, but the truth was the dogs determination not to quit would be the only thing locked.  I have a 16 month old American Pit Bull Terrier, who just happens to be a red-nose as well.  She has a powerful grip and lots of drive, but due to the fact that she has been repeatedly socialized with people and other animals her demeanor is spirited but friendly.  Train your pit bull properly and you won't experience any problems.  Neither Pit Bulls nor any other breed of dog is inherently vicious, like people they are the products of both genetics and environment.

I had a Rednose female (60 lbs) that decided she would take down a 800 lb Angus cow, after seeing this it doesn't the matter that it can't technically LOCK it's jaw. the pure determination of the animal and it's instincts are all that count. She took the cow down in only a couple of minutes with ease no harm done to her. Unfortunately I was forced to put her down, I take full responsibility for mine/her actions. She thought she was protecting me.

Cow attack contd: my dog was a very well trained, mellow tempered 4 yr old and I didn't have her on a leash in the backcountry, when it seemed there was nobody and nothing around a cow pops up out of the brush and I almost got trampled trying to stop her. plus the cow was trying to roll her off in a boulder filled stream and that did nothing. I just wanted to share this story so that somebody may learn something, or at least think of this next time your dog is off the leash in unfamiliar territory.

You all are right and wrong, about a pit bull having a locking jaw. first of all to those of you that say they do not.... your right. however those of you that say they do are also right. and this is because pit bulls have an extra muscle in their jaw, which allows them to grip and hold on tighter when they bite something than any other dog, that is why people believe that they have "locking jaws"

yes pit bulls can lock their jaws. Pit are breed for fighters and work. Why do u think think they used pits in the war in the olden days, because they had such a powerful lock in their jaws. They could lock down on their pray. I have a German Red Nose Albino Pit Bull she is NK Ak registered and she is only  3 months old she was play with a toy and she locked her jaws up on it. We had to take her to the vet they had to give her an injection for her to release it.

PIT BULLS DO NOT HAVE LOCK JAW~
To some it all up a pit bull has The strongest bite of all dogs because its jaw muscle stretches from the top of its head to the bottom of the jaw while a regular dogs muscle rides the bone of the jaw and only the jaw. Thats why when looking for a pit bull a lot of the time they will tell you the size of the head because the bigger the head the bigger the muscle in its jaw and the harder the bite will be.
this is all scientifically proven
sorry i do not have the source to back it up.

Well I'm a vet and i cant say for sure what dog has the strongest jaws but there have been studies. A study of a pit, a rott, and german shepherd, using a bite piece (something like a mouth-guard) found that the average jaw strength was about 350 psi. Of the three animals the pit-bull did not exhibit the strongest jaws, the german shepherd did. No domestic dog is able to exhibit over 1000 psi. The Grey wolf is reported to have jaw strength of up to 1300 to 1500 psi. Wikipedia it if you like.

NOW YOU TELL ME WHO IS THE "BETTER" BREED! MY DOGS HAVE ALL HAD A PROPER UP BRINGING AND ARE WELL SOCIALISED WITHIN MY FAMILY I HAVE NEVER HAD ONE OF MY DOGS BITE A HUMAN. TO THE PERSON WHO POSTED THE ORIGIONAL QUES I HOPE YOUR DOG HAS A GOOD AND PROPER UPBRINGING. LOOK AFTER HIM/HER AS THEY WERE YOUR CHILD. actually pitbull'sdo have locking jars...let me finish, all(i think) mammals jars lock, my friends jar locked and he had to go to the hospital to get his jaw injected with a relaxent. jar locking is a last resort for any animal, its extremely painful for any animals jaws to lock.

by the jaw locking, the muscles spasm and the mammal cant control it, so even if he/she wanted to, they could not let got. i hope i cleared some things up.

so in a sense a pitbull'sjaw can lock, but its the muscle and only used as a last resort. if truely a pitbull or any other dog could lock their jaw, then dog fights would not result in so many injuries would it?

think about it, if pitbulls locked their jaws in a fight, then only a few bite marks would be given!!!

think about what i said and stop listen to fools who says "pitbulls can lock their jaws", i'dlike to see a pitbull or any mammal bite that person then you try to get them to let go. it might be as painful as it is for the dog as it would be for you

The infamous locking jaw is a myth. The American Pit Bull Terrier and related breeds are physiologically no different from any other breed of dog. All dogs are from the same species and none have locking jaws. Dr. I Lehr Brisbin of the University of Georgia states, "To the best of our knowledge, there are no published scientific studies that would allow any meaningful comparison to be made of the biting power of various breeds of dogs.

A pit bulls jaws are different then other dogs in not that they lock or that the jaw bone is any different but the fact that the muscle in a pit bulls jaw extends from the top of his skull this is not found in any other breed and thats why a pit bull has so much power in his jaws

Pits don't have a locking mechanism in their jaws. The only locking mechanism is their brain telling them how good it feels to be able to clamp down on something with their chompers, more so when they think its ok to do so or feel its necessary. At times even I have a urge or sensation to apply pressure flexing the jaw muscle sometimes.People over time have misunderstood the term lock jaw in comparison to pits. They actually are clamping down with an unbelievable amount of pressure to where it appears its locked.Trust me.

First off pit bulls do not have locking jaws, all of us that have owned them for years know this. Pit Bulls have very strong jaw muscles and therefore it is harder to break their "bite" so to say. My pit bull Zombie aka Bubba just passed this july and was eleven years old. That dog raised many foster puppies and kittens as of they were his own. He was neutered at a young age and never ever harmed a soul. I had a child when he was ten and even though he never had many children around (except the neighborhood kids that loved to play with him) he took to her right away. Zombie was by her side every moment allowing her to climb all over him and even when she was in her bouncer he wanted to be so close that she would kick him in the head but he wanted to be by her side to protect her so bad he endured anything. I will always be and advocate of this highly abused breed. They are the most loving and loyal breed I have ever met. I remember my days at the SPCA were I would mend their wounds and bring them back to health and hopefully find them loving homes. These dogs are the product of their owners and that is the bottom line. They do what we want them to do. PERIOD. So if you have an idiot owner then there is the chance that you may have a dangerous dog but naturally they are the most loving of any breed I have come across in my twelve years of animal care/veterinary work.

Ok... the lock jaw is not what most people may think. People think that they have a special bone structure that allows them to lock their jaw so nothing can get out, this is in fact not true. The dogs muscle for that jaw is what keeps it closed. The Pit bull's most often have a nice amount of muscle on their jaw which keeps it closed nice and tight and makes it hard to open which is why people think they can lock the jaw shut....

"latin_thug"... .The reason the dogs can hang on for hours is because of the strength of that muscle. And like you said you have to massage them because the muscle because its sore from using that muscle to keeping their jaw closed so they can hang. Its like if a person goes and works out or do activities for long periods of time using pacific muscles, they also will be  sore from all that use.

I hope this helps clear up those questions if a jaw actually locks.

no they dont lock but just pouring water on them wont make them stop. when all of my dogs play with rags or ropes i have to wait till they let go, the rope breaks, or me going over and putting a stick in their mouth and breaking the hold.

Actually people a when a person says locked their jaws he means the pit has pulled his jaw to the side and made it even more powerful. by standard testing a human can do the same as well. the turning of your jaw is kind of like locking it. it is hard to get loose and when the pit unturns his jaw it should make a popping noise... i have 8 pits and they all are capable of locking. i use a towel rolled up and a stick on the inside of it and i train my pits to their fullest all have locked and unlocked without any trouble at all and for the people saying that they cannot lock their jaws.. they actually can and do not tell me i am wrong i have trained and sold pits for over 22 years. and have seen everything possible.

its not that pits CAN lock thier jaws its the spasm that comes if they bite down too hard. so some of yall are right and some are wrong. pits cant do it them selves it just happens but happens so rarely that it shouldnt be called locking thier jaw. another thing is when any dog bites someone or something they sometimes bite part of their cheek and if they dont let go it could cause the spasm. and the term lockjaw is something that people, cats, and dogs deal with. its the body's reaction to muscle spasms.
