yuiop: you are a repulsive person for saying something so demeaning!! For your information there are medical reasons as to why people are obese.  Nobody wants to be like that, and usually its not by choice. Obesity is also hereditary.  Its people like you who make this world so shallow.  You should be ashamed of yourself!!

i would have to are with freddy. we all have skeletons in our closets, whether it be obesity or what we are human beings and all crave attention and acceptance from other humans. who do you think you are? no person is better than the next no matter what you look like. we all will have to answer for our short comings in the long run. look in the mirror and ask yourself " am i so perfect that i should downgrade any human being? people that are obese need help bottom line not your selfish discriminating remarks. GROW UP!!!!!!

Ok so there are medical reasons for obesity but i think the sufferers of these conditions represent a minority in obese people. I have a question for you all. Why do we have such a low opinion of people who smoke or use drugs? We generally frown upon these people and yet we are sympathetic to those who eat too much. Why is the desire to eat food a more understandable form of self-inflicted harm than shooting up on junk? I think part of the reason lies in the fact that we are more likely to know an obese person than a drug addict. Obesity if something we have to deal with because it is literally thrust in our faces whereas we understand drug abuse, smoking, etc. by the effects it has on our society and so judge the "perpratators" without having to  know them first. I'm not saying it's ok to judge anyone by their appearance nor am I saying that any of you haven't already taken this into account. But if a smoker represents self-harm, than an obese person represents self harm brought on by greed and it's this thought and that of people starving to death somewhere else that I think annoys people like yuiop.

blahblahblah, you are partially correct.it does make me angry to see anyone abuse themselves in any way at all. all abuse is equal. but, we still need to not be so mean to people. one day those of us that feel we do not have those problems may develop another problem similar and would really be
hurt if we were treated the way yuiop describes. we are all people and make mistakes in our lives and need someone to help us through at times in our lives. not be teased or descriminated like cruel children do in school. thats why i said "grow up" to yuiop.

I actually just asked someone about this (the actual question, I mean).  The answer:  it's a kind of a subculture, and people tend to get involved in subcultures when they are not happy in the dominant culture.  As evidenced by several of the posts in this thread, obese people are constantly reminded that they are unacceptable to the standards of popular culture.

I believe that jelly is on the right track when stating that since obese people are not not generally considered acceptable by popular cultural standards - they might gravitate toward "sub"cultures where they might be more accepted. Additionally there is the fact that many European medieval cultures tended to accept largeness because it was considered to be a sign of a wealthier person (someone who could have all the food they desired). Fatness also protected one in times of famine. And, on a more practical note -- larger women tend to look better in long dresses, etc. And larger men can cover up with some armor -- not that any of us fat people want to really admit this out loud. And I wonder if the SCA gives the smart, yet fat person, a place to display real talents such as artistic or battle skills. When you are accepted you can let go of worrying about what people think and spend more time just learning new things and growing... However, as a fat person who's desperately changing her lifestyle (40 lbs lost so far), I do worry about us overweight SCA'rs as we get older. Will there be more heart attacks after battles -- due to out-of-shape knights battling in heavy armor and heat? We've all got to be aware of being "in shape" physically via exercise! Will the overweight, asthmatic woman have an attack that the chirurgeons cannot handle? They say that exercise matters even more than the actual body weight. I do hope that more of us shape up just for the sake of health! I'm NOT saying we all ought to look like models...

blahblahblah and disgusted people,
even if people were to stop eating as much as they are to make them fat, it would not help people in other parts of the world starving. They are starving because they have no money to buy food, not because the fat people ate all of the food. Some people can't help eating as much as they do. A lot of people turn to eating food to try solve their problems. Some really don't want to eat and they try really hard to lose the wait so that they can be accepted by hateful but popular people. That's why many times people, not just fat people, sometimes turn to anorexia and bulimia, or even suicide. Don't make fun of them. Try to help them.

losing weight is not easy. obesity would not be a problem if it were easy. i have had an eating disorder for 2 years because i personally don't see myself as beautiful with extra weight and although some people do think that this is beautiful. most of the overweight people i know are trying to lose weight. and but if losing weight weren't so hard i wouldn't have an eating disorder and obesity probably would not be a problem in this country. no one can say that obese people are disgusting and need to lose it until they have experienced trying to do so. it's not fun.

No one has the right to judge any one.  That is why we all will some day reach judgement day with the big guy upstairs.  Until then, live your life and stop worrying about other people and worry about yourself.  You (YUIOP) (whatever that means?) are obviously insensitive and insecure about yourself to feel the necessity to speak negatively about others whatever their problems may be. Get a LIFE!!

Im not convinced that fat people are that way because of bad genetics.  My roommate is digustingly over weight most likely due to the absurd amount of junk food and soda he shoves down his throat, and the fact that he hardly ever moves around. I am constantly subjected to his poor hygiene, body odor, flatulence, heavy breathing, and nightly snoring.  And dont tell me being fat isnt unhealthy, the kid can't make it from the room to the dumpster, forcing me to dispose of his food refuse.  Being someone who eats healthy and excersises, i am disgusted by his abuse of his own body. Maybe all fat people arent like this but he is a complete glutton. I have tried to be nice about it but he has made my living conditions miserable, and ill be forced to confront him about it if he cannot control his smell, non-stop farting, and loud snoring

People that have little body mass themselves have a harder time suiting up in full plate, and RUNNING in it, and physically competing against other people with all the weight..  The layer of hot air that winds up filling the armor also penetrates to the body core more quickly on someone that is thinner.

And actually, a layer of fat is just natural for some people.  Genetic lineage from a cold country?  Well, your predecessors probably would have frozen to death if they were thinner.  It isn't a function of gluttony, or lack of discipline - that is how many peoples' bodies are supposed to grow.

For blahblahblah'squestion, we tend to look down on drug users because they don't contribute much (if any) to the society that gave them the roads they drive on, gave them the security necessary to obtain a home without fighting for it, will eventually spend innumerable dollars on taking care of the health problems their drug use will bring on; I'm sick of paranoid methamphetamine addicts pulling a gun on SEARCH AND RESCUE teams because they corroded their own brains too much to tell the difference between S&R uniforms and police uniforms..  Drug addict parents make kids that don't get educations.. the list would go on forever.  No, eating an extra snack in the evening out of minor boredom is actually better than all that, blahblahblah.

The guys I knew in the SCA that *appeared* obese actually just had a ridiculous amount of muscle mass, just by-the-way.  I would like to see yuiop bench 300 pounds!

Also, more SCAers I knew were very smart, and shockingly, many engineering fields require a large amount of sitting behind a desk, which does not burn much energy.

Anyways.. sorry, but I haven't got any answer for you, azwolf!  :/

Well, I am fat. I weigh 230lbs and I'm only 5'2. I have always been big, which is most likely all my fault. I love food and I love to eat. But, i do not like being fat. I am depressed about it everyday. I hate how I look, I'm rather nasty looking. I get so depressed, I want to eat. The more depressed I get the more I eat and the more I eat the more depressed I get. It is a never ending cycle and it is impossible to break free. I'm trapped and skinny people just do not and never will understand. Us fat people don't like being fat but it is alot easier to put on weight than it is to take it off.

i agree with blahblahblah and grace. and it's true that for some it is a medical issue. my best friend is 100 pounds over weight. the way he feels about it is that it is his fault he got that way, which is true, but why would someone let themselves get that way? being obese is disgusting. it looks bad, and you are endangering your health. for me, i am now only 30 pounds over weight (i lost 30 so far) and my health has definitely improved. i am much more active, i look forward to having kids someday and be able to run around with them and not feel tired after running 10 feet. unless it is a medical reason, i have absolutely no sympathy for obese people. and if you are a lard, don't let your kids be fat too! I'm sick of seeing fat 10 year old and younger. thats what makes them vulnerable to being made fun of at school and stuff.

I think what yuiop said was harsh, but I agree with it for the most part. When I see a picture of someone who's extremely morbidly obese, I feel disgusted but also sorry for them. I was watching a documentary about a 627 pound woman, and she couldn't even get in the car. It took about 5 minutes and she was crying saying she couldn't do it. It is disgusting and undisciplined to let yourself go that much. And about the comment about yuiop being really gross to other people, i'venever seen him so I don't know, but I think the only thing that looks as gross as a person that's hundreds of pounds overweight could be maybe an extremely extremely hideously deformed face, which I doubt more then 1 in about 100,000,000 people have. And people that are obese do need help, but everyone has different opinions on what would help. Some people think that making fat people even more outcast and looked down upon would help, while others feel that the only way is to tell them it's not their fault and it's entirely genetic, and to go on only the loosest diet. However, those are the extremes of the issue. But I do have respect for people like Grace who are at least trying to shed off their excess pounds and change their lifestyle.

I believe that obesity is the cause of a fearful and scared society, one in which people drift unhappily through there lives and feel powerless to make the necessary changes.  I have been overweight for 90% of my childhood.  As soon as I lived alone when I was 19, I lost all of the weight and was nearly thin (I wasn't skin and bones, but I surely wasn't wobbly anymore).  I did not have a reason to watch TV, sit around and eat anymore, I suddenly felt like I had control.  I ate differently, I ate less and cared about what I ate.  I still ate the occasional junk, but that became an exception and not a daily past-time.  Now, nearly ten years later, my weight has gained dramatically and I find myself in a life that I really do not like.  I am in a relationship, am continuously stressed about money, hardly have any friends, feel completely sorry for myself and am too scared to move on into a new and positive direction.  But instead of doing that, I choose to feed myself movies and food, while sitting or lying down.  Is that a dream?  Certainly not!  So perhaps the answer to obesity lies in making decisions based on what makes us truly happy, living our dreams, going on adventures and for once in our lives focusing on ourselves, rather than on others.  I also feel that the 'fear' accumulates the layers around my body as a form of protection.  Yet this is not a protection, but rather something that tends to make me feel very vulnerable, uncomfortable and unhappy with myself, in other words unsafe.  Forget diets, forget sports and focus on creating a life that you truly want!!!!!

blahblahblah, i completely agree with your comment. My view on the obesity situation used to be a little the same (not so insulting) as yuiop though i would never in my right think of voicing my opinion out loud! I'm not trying to insult anyone and i appolagise if i do but i never really understood why anyone would let them selves destroy their body and continue to do so even when the affects were obvious. obesity is becoming a global epidemic and even though society has been more and more used to the busy work life and less active culture, i think, still does not give people an excuse to over eat, or eat unhealthily with out exercising. people in the developed world know how dangerous being overweight is to your health and yet people still choose to sit in front of the TV and eat their daily dose of McDonald's, never thinking of going for a nice walk for as little as half an hour a day. it's not hard to do, nobody has the excuse to not look after their bodies and  health. i understand that loosing weight is a very difficult thing but it can be done! unfortunately though, the healthier more active way of life seems to be going out the window these days.

I agree that there is a much higher than average degree of obese people in the SCA, and I also find that this is true in a lot of other subcultures for many of the reasons already suggested here.

I myself and somewhat fat, after a major injury and the long road back to recovery and losing the weight, not much helped by another recurring phenomenon in the society, the well meaning "friend" who turns out to be a predator.

IT is important to bear in mind that subcultures represent a certain degree of delusion, namely a belief that you are someone or something else and this goes hand in hand with the delusion many fat people have of becoming thin eventually or that other things they do make up for their appearance. In any case they are trying to deny reality and make up for their own belief that they should be someone other than who they are.

Yes some people have medical problems when it comes to obesity however that accounts for about 5% of the population thats overweight. I heard a statistic that states, "60% of children between the ages of 5-8 are overweight in America." This is really sad considering our media pushes physical beauty and not the beauty that comes within. Which in the end, is all that matters.

In response to blahblahblah, i understand your point, but I do not agree.  Food is necessary to human life; drugs are not. I think that is the most imperative difference.  Drug users are wrong to try drugs in the first place, whereas people who try food are obviously not strange, considering everyone has to.  I don't think it is fair to compare drug users and obese people.  I think the only reason why over consuming food is looked down upon is because it makes for  an unpleasant sight for others to look at.  Sure, you could argue that it is unhealthy, but so are a lot of other things that are not nearly as taboo as overeating.  I also believe you give yuiop too much credit. I think he/she is just plain ignorant and doesn't think of the starving children in third world countries or the health problems caused by obesity. He/she is just superficial and judgmental.
