When removing dew claws from the front feet, wherein the dew claw is considered bony.  What are the risk to the dog?  IE:cutting into the bone, can the bone become infected?  Are there nerves which could be damaged?

It really all depends on the age of the dog. Most breeders(or Vets)remove dewclaws of puppies at birth, when the bones are not fully developed. There is only slight bleeding and little chance for infection if everything has been sterilized properly. Plus no stitches are required. When the dog gets older, the procedure requires surgery, which in itself, has it's own risks.

Our dog had this horrible procedure done as a puppy, and it was done incorrectly.  At 9 years old we discovered that they did not remove it all and now she got a bad infection, and had to have another surgical procedure to remove the remnants of the original operation.  This was done before we adopted her--we would have NEVER done this!!!

Having had experience with the giant breeds I much prefer to have their dew claws removed within 48 hours of birth by my veterinary surgeon, the puppy does not require to be put under anesthetic nor require stitching.  Dew claws can easily get ripped especially in walking or running on rough rocky terrain, it also reduces the risk of the dog catching its eyes with the claws should it paw its own face or even the face of a sibling when playing. I is interesting to note that some vets will not remove dew claws at any age.

Having just assisted in my first removal of the dew claw I can tell you two things. One even at the young age of a couple days old the puppies are better off getting a local anesthesia or else the declawing/dethumbing can be barbaric. Secondly one good stitch will do some good in terms of helping sterilization.

I just got a puppy, and one of the dew claws on his back leg is barely evan attached to the skin. It is painfull for him and I was wondering if removing it is something only a vet can do. By the way there are no bones at all in the dew claws, but many blood vessels and nearves.
