Can cairns be let outside in an unfenced area without a leash. How can I teach my cairn to stay with me?

Yes, my west highland was excellent outside, on his own, without a leash/any form of constraint. We were able to teach him to stay within our property limits (5 acres). He kept himself busy - on patrol. Every morning, when he would be first let out, he would patrol the perimeter, then all the outbuildings (from the garage to all the sheds, to the green house) sniffing with tail upright. As soon as he sniffed out something, he would be on the hunt. This could last for several hours as they are very persistent. He was trained to come on demand...I was am certain he would rather be outside than in.
