Because, Angel, there are two things, generally, one is involved in, when working for a company (or just life in general?)....1. - Ongoing operations...processes are developed and understood and 2. Projects.  If you are not involved in one or the other you are called 'overhead'...meaning you are neither maintaining the existing processes nor are you creating new processes...therefore you are expendable and, at the first sign of financial trouble, you will be out of a job.  Project Management is a set of agreed upon knowledge (rules) that allow one to manage and communicate all the details, schedules, people, budgets, performance etc. that goes in to creating 'new' stuff.  For more look at Tom Peters and or extreme project management.  BTW, if your looking for a career PM is a good one to pursue.

Dear Angel, the importance of project management comes from its fucus on acheiving the objectives that might be killed by the concentration of people doing their traditional daily work , the ongoing operations of any organization. It is also important as it applies managerial process and has its tools that give us a good opportiunity to succeed in achieving our objectives.
