There are many ways to learn Magic. If you have any friends that play it, just ask them. But what I suggest is to look up the rulebook on the Internet, or by a magic starter CD. It will tell you how to every last move in Magic until your ready to play a game with real cards.

Phasing is just that during your upkeep, if a permanent with phasing is in play, then it is removed from the game. If a card with phasing is removed from the game, it comes back into play. If I remember correctly phasing triggers come into play abilities, but not leave play abilities. So every other turn you have access to the card.

I think learning by reading the entire rulebook is too much of jumping in at the deep end, since the rules can be really intimidating if you try to take it all in at once. So if you're completely new to MTG I'd recommend against learning that way.

There are starter packs available, where you'll get two smaller decks containing less complicated cards as well as detailed instructions for each of the abilities on them.

As far as I recall there are three levels of cards, beginner advance and expert so you can get into it a bit at a time.

If you can't get a friend to teach you, perhaps you can convince a friend to split the cost of a starter pack with you and you can learn together.

There's also a free trial of magic online, if there is a tutorial included, then you could learn for free as well as try the game out against live opponents.

And to answer a question above: a permanent is any card that stays in game after you've played it (like a creature or an enchantment), as opposed to instants or sorceries which are put into your graveyard after they've been executed.

this game is easy phasing is when your monster is almost dead and the monster is down to less then 1/1 you can revive them but i would not that gives you a chance for your enemy to attack your health.

I suggest that for any questions you have, go to wizards.com. They are the official makers of magic the gathering and have rules, tips, card information, and also online tutorials for beginners. If you can not find the answers to any questions there, type in a few keywords on google.com, that should help to answer them. Best of all though, is playing. The rules don't really sink in until you are able to apply them to the game.

Magic is SO much better than U gay hoe (no offence to homosexuals) you start at 20 life and with seven cards in your hand.  You somehow decide who goes first (most players cut the deck, highest mana cost wins)  Whoever goes first does not draw at the begining of their turn.  Your turn goes like this.  First you untap all permanents (cards that stay on the field untill they are destroyed etc creatures, enchantments, enchant creatures, and lands.)  Then you have your Upkeep phase, Nothing happens during your upkeep unless you have a card that makes something happen, such as "during your upkeep, you may have kyren sniper deals 1 damage to target player" Then you have your draw phase, where you draw a card.  Then you can play a land that is in your hand (ONLY ONE).  Next, you have your first main phase.  During your main phases, you can play spells (all cards except lands are spells)  Then you have your attacking phase (you can attack your opponent, unlike in yu-gi-oh where u attack monsters)  (only creatures that have haste or are "uneffected by summoning sickness" can attack the turn they come into play, other creauters have to wait one turn before they can attack or tap)  (taping is something that you do in order to show that you are using an ability or attacking.  Tapped creatures can't block, but blocking doesn't cause creatures to tap)  Then you decide blockers, your oppenent chooses which creatures he wants to block and which creatures he wants to let through, you opponent can also play instants (spells that you can play at any time, no matter whos turn it is) Resolve all damage dealt and recieved.   Then you have your second main phase (and last for the turn) where you can play more spells.  And thus concludes your turn.  any more questions you have can be sent to me at R_maudib@yahoo.com thank you!

RE: What is a permanent?

A permanent is anything that stays in play longer than a turn.

- Lands
- Creatures
- Enchantments
- Artifacts
As long as a card is of the aforementioned types, it is a permanent.

A permanent is a creature that stays in unlike an instant that goes to the grave yard after one turn. I don't get tapping and untapping (of course it's the simplest thing in the game) I get everything else but yah.

Magic is one of the first trading card games (tcg) that was created. Its rules are many and its card count is enormous. With all this in front of you it seems very overwhelming and difficult to learn. As with most things you do in life it's better to try it first then read and learn the rules. I suggest getting a starter kit, or just getting a 40 card deck that only has lands, creatures and sorceries, this will allow you to play a basic game without all the extra features. Once you play a game you will start to see how the game works and flows. When you feel comfortable with the basic game, start to expand your deck with instants, enchantments, better and more complicated creatures, also read some of the more basic rules to start to learn what abilities are and how to use them.

The rules, how the standard game is played, and what each card does is beyond the scope of this post, but i will answer a few of the questions.

How do I know what cards are good? This question is confusing, I am not sure exactly what you mean. All the cards do their part, while others do it better than some. You will just want to play and figure which cards you think are good and play with those. If you were talking about the rarity or price then just go to google and search the card.

How do I play the game?
There are many phases and steps in a standard game, if you choose to you can create a starter deck and just play with the basic phases to learn the game then start to learn all phases and steps.

One turn consists of,

Untap
  Untap all your cards unless a card otherwise directs you.

Draw
  Draw one card from the top of you deck.

Main
  Play one land of any type you may have in your hand, you may also play any creature card or sorcery card you are able to pay for.

Combat
  Declare attackers, play sorceries.
  Declare Blockers.
  Combat damage

Main
  If you did not play a land your first main phase you can play it now. You are also allowed to play an creature card or sorcery cards in your hand, if you can pay for it (i.e. you have enough untapped lands)

Clean Up
  If you have more than 7 cards in your hand you must discard till you have only seven.

It is then your opponents turn. ( The untap phase allows only the active player to untap, not every player.)And the phases start all over again.

I will not get anymore specific than this, any more information needed is on the magicthegathering.com website.

What are permanents?
In your main phase you may play creature cards, enchantments and artifacts. When this come into play you will have to play their mana cost (shown in the top right hand corner) you then lay it down and it goes on the stack, at this point it is a spell. When it resolves it becomes a permanent. All this means is that it will remain in the play area until something removes it. Cards that are not permanents include Instants, Sorceries, and Mana Sources. Lands are permanents, but when played they are not considered spells and do not go on the stack they go directly into play and can be used the turn they are played.

Again the best place to learn magic is the magicthegathering.com website. It hosts all information that will get you from apprentice to adept.

GO buy the starter KIT! It will teach you everything you need to get started! Once you have learned how to play(the basics) go back a pre-constructed deck and play with that.... and they come with an insert that tells you all the things you need to know when playing the deck! and then just build off that pre-constructed deck! after that enter some turnys or go watch some turnys you can learn alot!

Magic is a complex game. It deals with phasing, targeting, and tapping. The target is the creature of which you are about to attack. The creatures phase back in when you summon them back in the game. Tapping and untapping is then you switch the targets.

look, its pretty simple, in the bottom corner, you will see a fraction for example 1/2 1 is its attack power, 2 is its indurance. trample is essentailly carryover damage, flying can only be blocked by flying (unless said otherwise) shadow can ONLY block or BE blocked by shadow. just go to playmagic.com to get more details

if you want to learn how to play MTG here it is:

each person has a deck of 60 cards or less and to figure who goes first look at the bottom card of you deck and see who has a bigger mana cost(the # plus how many symbols are in the top right of the card). then each person draws 7 cards. the person who goes first doesn't draw on the first turn. to play a card you have to play a mana or land(these cards have a picture of a kind of terrain and ether a sun/skull/fire ball/drop of water/tree will be at the bottom of your card). you can play only one per turn and it stays on the field the whole game. to actually play a card with a mana cost you have to tap(turn the mana card sideways) a # of mana that is shown on the top right of the card.

EX: if you have a card with the # 1 in the top right of the card along with 2 skulls you would have to tap 2 swamps and 1 other kind of land card then place the card on the field(you can play only one monster card[the card that has a slash in between 2 # at the bottom right of the card])

skull= swamp
sun= plains
tree= forest
drop of water= island
fire ball= mountain

one good thing to know is if a card is taped it cant do any thing EX: a monster cant attack or block.

    I will try to answer all the questions. First, TWS'sanswer to phasing, while correct, was incomplete. A permanent with phasing will "phase out" every other turn. It will "phase out" to the phased out (duh) area of the game. In this area, you cannot attack your opponent directly and cannot play things from your hand. All other rules in the phased out zone are normal except that a permanent will "phase in" to the normal game zone during your first upkeep it has been in there.
   Second,a permanent is something other than a instant, sorcery, or interrupt ( an interrupt is an old name for a instant ). The reason it is called permanent is because it stays on the field once you play it.
   Third, it would take a long time to write down how to play and the "comprehensive rules" witch you are probably reading are dizzying for almost all players. Look for a beginners rulebook and that should explain the basic rules.
    Lastly, it isn't a "hard" game per say but is one of the most confusing for sure. Read the third thing and you should be able to understand the basics soon.
