My dog keeps licking his rear end for extended periods of time. There does not appear to be any sort of drainage or raised areas on his hind end. Is there a medical reason as to why a dog might do this?

take your dog to the vet; there is a medical condition (for dogs) in which the anal glands (yes its gross to think about, and yes they exist) which shoudl usually be inside your dog's butt (to put it bluntly) are not where they should be (again, to be blunt). this usually requires surgery, but it is routine and most vets can do it with their eyes closed. its well worth the money, though, since leaving it untended can be quite uncomfortable and painful for the dog.

John is absolutely right. But also if your dog is a female, when she is on her period(heat) and a little after, she may lick there to keep the blood from dripping. Hope this helps Lori. Bye.

You should take your dog to the vet. If you have just noticed this recently, your dog may have worms caused from fleas. They are called Tape Worms and they break off in the digestive system and come out whenever your dog is eating, sleeping, or just lying around. If you notice any dried up rice pellets in her bed, you should take her to the vet to be wormed. Then put her on Advantage flea and tick.

you should stick your penis in there to see what the prolem is. if it feels good then continue for several hours unless your dog is whining. then stick it in his mouth to stop the loud barking. again if it feels good continue for several hours. but if you start to feel teeth take it out fast if you want to keep your penis. your dog might confuse it with a hot dog or in your case a vienna sausage. So watch out and be careful. but have fun and don't use crunchy peanut butter on your nuts. use creamy it feels better.

P.S. Trust me i had the same problem. it worked perfect except the bow legged walking style of my furry friend.

My dog is so gassy.  She is 10 but has never had this problem before and she is also very insistent on licking her rear ALL the time.  I haven't noticed any signs of worms and we just visited the vet last month before the gas came about and he did a fecal and blood test on her and the results came back NEG.

And then people let dogs like their face and lick the ice cream cone they are eating. Now that's gross.

I am having the same problem w/my weimeranar that is 2 years old.  He licks his anus at night and then I smell a fowl smell radiating from that area and it is so gross I cannot take it.  He was just at the vet and his stool was checked and they said he had no worms.  But I hear tape worms are hard to detect. I guess I should take him back to the Vet??
