Well..i also have a 93 passat VR66 and it has been in the shop for a month, and they still don't know whats the matter with it, it does this funny thing where it very randomly cuts off or studders and it is dangerous as you said , but they think it is an electrical relay that is the problem, because it seems to be very random.  The electrical systems in those cars are far from perfect, and i seriously doubt your husband can handle it, because i am a car buff myself and my mechanic doesn't even know yet what's the problem.

My car is doing something along the same lines, its an automatic and it seems to stutter when shifting. My mechanic says its nothing serious, but i don't know if that applies to your vehicle as well.

Check to see if your vacuum line running to a sensor mounted on the aft side of the air filter box is pinched tight where it bends toward the sensor.

It could be something as simple as the mass air flow sensor.  It goes bad a lot on vw's
Try going to your local junk yard and  picking one up; should be no more than 10-20 bucks and replace the one you have.  If this does not work then talk to your mechanic.  In FL Orlando area call Raycar International they specialize on vw'sand those guys are the best.

The same thing is happening with my car as well, it just turns off and then the battery light turns on and the oil light begins to blink.  I also have the VR66.  What the crap is wrong with our cars??

I have a 1997 Tiburon, I just had my Transmission rebuilt and was experiencing some slippage, my engine would rev alot before going into gear. Now, when I accelerate the speed of my vehicle it slows down almost like it's in neutra and then speeds up after approx 15 seconds of idoling. I dont know what the problem is. I keep taking it to the Transmission place where i got it fixed and they have done nothing about it.
Now i feel like the pain in the ass, but i was the one who paid 1400.00 to rebuild the tranny in the first place. So i'm unsure if it's a tranny problem or something else

common things that go wrong in passats are the fuel pumps are junk. LAck of fuel from a bad fuel pump leads to lack of fuel in the lines. This in turn ends up in the car sputtering becomes of lack of interneal combustions. I have a 95 passat, i know!
