Files saved as jpeg are compressed with some loss of information and decrease in file size.  However, in photoshop one can save a jpeg file with minimum compression (large file size) that actually increases the file size. How is this possible; does the operation actually add information to the file.  Thanks

No it does not add to the file it just expands what is there..it allows for you to be able to shrink the picture without loosing resolution or even enlarge the image to a certain size without loosing resolution. Gif and bitmaps can really get distorted when increasing size or when you are making it smaller a jpeg allows you to retain what you have when shrinking and it allows the picture to be increase to a bigger size without loosing to much..
