what is a elemental creature?

This is a creature with type/subtype of "Elemental" (i.e. Lightning Elemental).  On 8th edition cards it is denoted as "Creature - Elemental".  On older edition cards (somewhere before 7th edition), it will say "Summon Elemental".

in other words...elemental is its creature type.
