My Welsh Springer Spaniel has been to the vet twice, third time tomorrow because he has been scratching the back trunk.  We bathe him with conditioning shampoo & he has been on steroids, but the vet still doesn't know quite what to do?  Shall I try Atarax or benedryl?

Our Welsh Springer started licking and scratching his paws and rubbing his face on the carpet.  Also had ear infections and yeast.  Our vet said it was a food allergy to all products with corn, wheat, soy and maybe dairy. We took him off any foods and treats containing those ingredients (you have to read the small print on all food packaging labels for ingredients because those products are in almost all dog foods and treats).  Within 3 days he had stopped licking and itching!  Sometimes it takes longer for a dog to respond.
We switched him to a dry and canned food that had no Corn, Wheat, Soy or dairy products and he is doing wonderfully.  "Natural Balance" Duck and Potato dry and canned is what we are using.
On investigation, we found that many dogs have these allergies, but it is hard to diagnose.  Venison and potato are also used for dogs with these allergies.
Hope this helps your Welshie!  Good luck.

Our Welch Springer has awful allergies!  I don't want to have her constantly on Cortisone, obviously, but a maintainance dose of every-other-day medrol, plus a vension/potato diet has alleviated her symptoms for now. Our first vial of allergy serum, made of the most allergic reactors in her allergy tests, worked like magic!  But by the end of the second vial (about 6-7 months) we could see no improvement at all. My vet said Benadryl probably won't work, but I am going to try that next IF the vension/potato diet quits giving us these excellent results.
