can we make certain changes to data types without emptying the column?
for example increasing the length of a character field. But most changes
require the column to be empty when changing the data type. One way to go around it is to create a dummy table containing just the primary key and the column that you would like to change. - Copy all data to the dummy table
- Delete the content of the column- Empty the data in the column- Reformat the column in question- Copy the data back - Drop the dummy table As you noticed a newly created column will always be created last.
In case you need to do this operation with active users on-line, Oracle have some special tools for doing this on-line that would minimize the downtime.also pl tel me the other option or package used for it
