Im having trouble filling up my 1999 ford contour at the gas...

Im having trouble filling up my 1999 ford contour at the gas pump.  the pump keeps stopping it takes me 20 min. to get about 1 gal in it.  
  At one time I got a plactic hose down the filler neck and it worked fine until the next time I needed gas
