a)   Why is it impossible for an induction motor to operate at synchronous speed?
b)   At 440V, 50Hz, 6 pole, Y-connected induction motor is rated at 100hp ((1hp = 746W). The equivalent circuit parameters are;

R1 = 0.084         R2 = 0.066      XM = 6.9
X1 = 0.20         X2 = 0.165
PF&W = 1.5kW      Pmisc = 120W      Pcore = 1.0kW

   For a slip of 0.035, find

(i)   The line current IL.
(ii)   The stator copper losses PSCL.
(iii)   The air-gap power PAG
(iv)   The power converted from electrical to mechanical form PCONV
(v)   The induced torque Tind
(vi)   The load torque Tload.
(vii)   The overall machine efficiency.
(viii)   The motor speed in revs/min and in rads/sec.
(ix)   What is the slip at pull-out torque? What is the pull-out torque of this machine? What is the rotor speed at pull-out torque?

(x)   If the motor is to be driven from a 440V, 60Hz power supply, what will the pull-out torque be? What will the slip be at pull-out?

(xi)   What is the power factor of this motor at a slip of 0.035?
