I have a 1999 Chrysler Sebring, the motor turns over but will not start.  After a few minutes (after the engine cooled) it started ok and I took it to the dealership.  They found "no problem"  Now that I an 100 miles from home, it has happened again ( 1 year later)  I no longer have a warrenty and it will not start - even after cooling.  I need to know if anyone knows what the problem might be.  thank you !!

I have a 1999 town and country limited - all bells and whistles.  It fails to start 3 times in a row, and then the computer (alarm?) locks out the starter - you cannot do anything with it until it releases the controls.  It's been to the dealer 4 times, each time there are "No codes" and we get the van back.  I'm tired of being stranded! Does anyone else have a similar problem??  Chrysler keeps asking me if I'm using the correct Key - I only have the two they sold me!!

Have a 2000 Sebring LXi. Having a startup problem. Engine starts up really slow. Not sure if it's the starter that would effect this, or the battery, or the spark plugs. Anyone have any ideas?

I have had a similar problem, in which the car wouldn't start but would turn over, I had no voltage to the coil'sor fuel pump.  The problem was the fuel pump, i guess if your fuel pump shorts out it kills voltage to your coils or distributor as well.  So check for spark, if no spark check fuel pump, chances are that is the problem.

I have just experienced a complete stall, then rough idling and then it would not start.  This happen after just getting off the freeway at a traffic light last Thursday to my 97 Chrysler Sebring JX.  I had it towed to my mechanic and he thinks that there was a service buletin or recall on this very issue.  He is taking it to the Chrysler dealership tomorrow. I do not the exact cause for why it is not starting. He initially send something about a crankcase filter (part of the air filter assembly I think).

I have a 97 Sebring Convertible. I gave it to my daughter. Two nights ago it wouldn't start. Midas couldn't fix it. Dealer says it will be $950 for the distributor and $125 for labor!
The Kelley site says the two big problems with these cars are the EGC sensor and the distributor.
That's why I sign this . . . IndyPutz

Add yet another 96 Sebring to the mix.  I have not changed anything as of yet.  I have a guy looking at it, but he is baffled.  Please point me in the right direction.  The plug wires apparently are not sparking.  The car seems like it is out of gas, but it is not.

My 96 Sebring LXI is starting to act up just like what is described in the majority of these cases.  Went to store one day, it took three tries to start and then would barely run.
Driving on the highway the other day is was a though I ran out of gas, for  a split second I had nothing and then it was ok - kinda skipped like an old record.

Getting an oil change today and thought about changing the fuel filter.  The dealership wanted 108.00 labor to replace the fuel filter.  Told dealership, I will do it myself.

Wounder what is going on with my car.  Maybe I will replace the EGC sensor.

Any comments.

I can't believe that a dealer would try to charge you over 900 dollars for a distributor.  True, the distributor and coil are combined on the 2.5 liter Mitsubishi motor, but if you buy it over the counter at the dealer it runs under 300.  From someplace like AutoZone it is around 250.

The old 96 JXi!!!  I had to get a ride into work this morning because mine has been periodically dying and it will either start right back and I'll shoot some gas through it for a minute and it will be fine after that or it will make me wait for about 5 minutes to start back up.  This morning it would not start back up and I had to push it home from the daycare.  I've talked with three different colleagues and I wonder if the EGC sensor is the same and AIC (air intake controller) in other makes.  I haven't done anything first but I was told to take out the air filter and give it a try.  Then I was told, next time it happened, to take the valve cap off of the fuel pressure valve located somewhere on the fuel line and push it in just as you would an air valve on a tire.  If a fuel spurts out then the prob is not in your fuel system and you can eliminate that.  I will have a better update after I get home and diagnose my car.  Here is a link for the Chrysler codes that you can pull from your car.

My 97 Sebring does the same thing. Dies and doesnt wanna start. Like there is no fuel. Full tank. For all who have this problem, make your mechanic check the Crank Position Sensor. Here is a quote from a Chrysler dealership mechanic who was on the developmental team for the 95-98 sebrings.
"Turns out, it was the crank position sensor. It was busted up by the inner ring of the harmonic balancer when one of its rivets disappeared--and all hell broke loose. Well actually, everything just died and I coasted to a stop to end last season. Without crank position info, the ECU said, "What? Me fire the engine? Negatory."

So this might help a little bit. They are 85 bucks on Kragen.com

I have had a Chrysler Sebring LXi for about three monthes now.  Two big problems...the starting issue is easy to explain for my car, the alarm system shuts the fuel pump off every time i activate it which is good because that is what it is supposed to do and what most alarm systems are designed to do.  I just lock it and unlock it again with the remote and problem solved.  The other issue which is a little more agrivating is the brakes.  Come to find out, the chrysler sebring from 1996 to about 1999 have a design malfunction with the brakes and the calapers overheat which warps the roters and pads.  Now i have to get the entire brake system redone every year.  Good thing all of the parts are warranteed for one year so no money out of my pocket anymore.  Just a little info for you guys.

Ladies and Gentlemen...I'd like to add my two cents here...A friend from my workplace has a 1999 Sebring LXi doing the same thing (suprise suprise) and I can help by telling you what ISN'T causing it...it definately isn't the cap, rotor, distributor, wires, plugs (I put NGK Iridium IX in it-best plug on the planet!) fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, or the battery...

The next round of things I'm going to check is the alternator, engine compression, fuel pump/sender, and the ECU...

I've been banging my head against a wall for about three weeks now and all I can say is sell the damn things and buy a Honda!

I have a '96 sebring jxi" The same issues with the engine cutting out for no reason. Some days it won't happen at all...but most days it goes through little periodic fits of this. This has been taking place for the past 5 months (since I've owned the car) Took it to the mechanic and had all kinds of system diagnostics performed. They said "No problems" handed me the car back...same thing over and over. I wasn't planning on keeping the car very long anyway, so decided just to deal with it. Today I get in the car and it won't turn over or even attempt to. The lights come on, the windows roll down, the top goes up and down, but not even a click when trying to start the car. Does anyone know what kinds of problems this could be.....what makes a car not even try to turn over? Could it be this EGC sensor that I am hearing about in previous posts? awaiting responses: Swangasylm@aol.com

I have a 1997 Sebring.  December of 2003...the fuel pump was replaced.  About a week ago, I was having trouble getting my car started.  It would turn over, but wouldn't start until after a few times.  It finally won't start at all.  Had it towed to the shop...said it was the fuel pump again.  They put a new fuel pump in and the car will turn over, but still won't start.  They put a bypass on it (putting fuel into the injectors) and it starts fine.  So, they said it has to be something between the pump and the engine.  Any ideas?  I have heard everything from the relay to the computer itself.

97 Sebring LXi. Won't start in the rain. Acts like it is out of gas. If battery doesn't die while cranking, I can eventually (several minutes cranking) get it to fire. Then it usually stalls immediately. Repeat cranking and starting, eventually it starts and I can increase rpm'swithout stalling (still in park). If I put it in gear it immediately stalls. Finally after several restarts I leave the engine running in park until it comes up to full temp. Then we can drive. The entire process takes about 20 minutes to start the car in the rain (assuming the battery doesn't die). This has happened on multiple rainy days. Any ideas?

1999 300M 58,000 miles

My car won't start either, but after it is towed to my mechanic (private one) it starts.  It has twice died while running at 65 mph.  That's a knuckle biting experience.

No one knows the cause, not even the dealer.  I suspect it is the radiator cap.  I'm going to take the cap off, and run a new HONDA under it.  That should fix the problem, for sure!!

Seriously, I've had it with this car.  The transfer case had to be replaced at 45,000 miles, the car has always shaken, but less now after the new transfer case.

Every 5,000 miles I have had to replace the brakes.  NO, I do not ride the brakes, I use the "slap-shift" to slow down.  Turns out the pads are steel, the routers a lightweight metal, the pad eats into the router, on and on.

My old 76 Mercury only needed a brake job every 40K miles.  I kept her for 20 years.  I won't be saying the same about this 300M.

I wouldn't recommend any Chrysler to anyone.  Too bad, but I'll be buying a foreign made vehicle.  :-(

Ours is a 96 Seb. Conv.  Just shuts off while driving, usually when you let off the gas. Then wouldn't'start back up. Cranks OK but doesn't fire up. Dealership put it on the computer analyzer, found bad "upper oxy sensor" $300 but still does it 2-3 times in 15 min then not again for days.If you let it sit for 3 to 15 min. then it starts back up.

No fix yet!

I have a 97 Sebring convertible.  Same problem as most...sounds like it's starting up never turns over.  Took it in, and it looks life it is the anti-theft that went out which is hooked to the ignition.  600.00 part from dealer and about 300.00 in labor. If you make sure you windows are rolled up lock the door and then unlock it with the key it is a temp fix to get the anti-theft to release, but it wills till happen until it goes completely out and then you have to have it replaced...Hope this helps!

dear Sebring owners,
I got basically the same problem, I started with wires, plugs, air cleaner, professional injectors cleaned, engine light is on misfire in number 3 cyl. after all that money and work, still have the problem of a rough idle. Distributors are on ebay for 220.00. but I think I will try the egc sensor. any help out there would be an answer to prayer. dealer wont take my word for it on the plugs and wires, they want to start at the begining and charge me 450 for wires and plugs again, and 75 for diag. then go from there. No more chryslers for me. I am going to go back to classic cars. -Tracey

I have a 1999 town and country limited - all bells and whistles as well... and I have the exact same F'n problem!!!  Turns over 3 times and then the alarm (I guess?) locks me out!  The first few times, I unhooked the battery cable and let the computer reset and it started back up in about 10 mins. The last 2 times, it took almost 24 hours before the computer decided to let me start it. Luckily the last 2 times I have been at home.... maybe next time I will not be so lucky. I now carry a tent and sleeping bag with me.  There is no point on going to the dealer when its running because everything seems to be fine?????? I paid them a hundred bucks to put it on diagnostic and all they ended doing was to spray some anti-corrosion goo on my battery terminals..... guess what?.... didn't help!!

Totally annoyed!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a '98 Sebring LX Coupe.  I am at 124,000 miles, and for the last two months I have been experiencing start up issues also.  I have had no problems previous to this.  I do not want to get raped by the dealer.  Funny, everytime I plan to have it looked at, it starts right up.  This problem is not being detected by diagnostic machines.  I spoke with a Chrysler Service Dept rep the other day.  He advised it could be my fuel pump, cam sensor {what is that?), or low to no pressure in my fuel rail.  Could also be my stater.  Since this issue is intermitten, it has to "have" the problem in order to "fix" the problem.  I am going to Econo Lube Saturday morining.  I hope I can figure it out. Shirley, I don't know what to tell you, but, you will be the first to know what I know.

If the engine quits and the tach drops to zero, this indicates that the spark has quit, therefore an ignition problem. May mean bad crank sensor, bad PCM or other sensor in the ignition circuit.

i have the same problem as all of you guys: RPM drop to 0,engine shut down & finally long start or no start. I made some research & it's seems to me that a problem is a bad crank sensor. It's deffinatly not fuel problem( with a bad fuel system engine is dying slowly, while electical fault looks like you turned the ignition off). So, to my mind, check crank sensor first( that what i'm gona do shortly).

I have a 99 JXi and I got stuck on the side of the road just like all of you.  We ran codes on it, nothing.  We replaced the fuel filter (which is a major pain the ass as it sits above the fuel tank and the fuel tank had to be emptied, tank dropped, removed, back seat removed, etc.) and it is STILL doing it.  The funny thing is that it seems to be getting WORSE.  We bought a fuel pump and are going to try that BUT KNOW THIS.  We had the ECG sensor replaced last year (hot day, none of the dash instruments work, etc) and within 2 months the sensor crapped out again.  I'm wondering if it is the sensor again.  Will post more when we try the fuel pump.  Chrysler needs to do a recall on the sensor for the owners.  BTW my car ran great up until this episode with 141,600+ miles on it.

It's the Crank Shaft Sensor that is crapping out folks.  $200 and you are golden... but for the record you might want to keep your fuel filter/pump changed before that goes too.

My 97 Town and Country behaves like Martin's, above.  It will run about 3 seconds then stop. No codes, and dealer has replaced two computers, ignition switch and clock-spring, all in all, about $1800 so far, and the problem is still not fixed.  Dealer acts like it is the only car he ever heard of to do this.  Glad I have company, but tired of getting stranded.  We love the comfort, but they lost sale of a 2005 for my wife.

I have a 99 Sebring LXI that 161,378 miles and runs like its brand new, until Three months age. Mine did it once and then started. One month later it wouldn't do nothing, so i took it to the Chrysler. They said my battery was weak, then they call back because the car still wouldn't start, later they said it was the Neg. cable because of corr. was in the wire. That cost me 274.16, guest what, One month later car done the same thing. Just took it back to chrysler and made them fix it. They are  replaced the starter, and EGC sensor with 50% off the price.

My 1999 Sebring just died on me one day while I was in a shopping center.  Parked, went in to shop, came out, the car wouldn't start.  Had someone from work come pick me up, hubby came to get me after work and we went to see if he could fix the car. It had been about 2 hrs since it died on me, and when we tried it, it started right up! Since then, it does the same thing almost every time we drive it.  It will stall and die completely, and if we let it sit for awhile (sometimes 5 minutes, sometimes an hour or so) it will start right up.  Hubby has changed some sensors & relays, but nothing has solved the problem.
Right now, it's dead in a parking lot 20 miles away from home.  It's 39 degrees outside, so we left it sitting and got a ride home.  When I go back tomorrow morning, if it starts up, we're driving it to the dealership down the road and trading it in! I've had enough.

Chrysler engines are known for crank sensors and cam sensors going out.  When either of these sensors goes out the car will turn over endlessly and not start.  Also the fuel pumps have been somewhat of a problem in a few different model years of the chryslers, both fuel pumps and crank sensors are easy for any knowledgable mechanic to check.  If your mechanic is "baffled" I think you need a new one.

My 2 cents

My 96 Sebring JXI acted like it ran out of gas. Added gas and it still wouldn't start.  The dealership is telling me the whole distributor is burned up and quotes me $1400 and says $1100 of that is just the distributor.

I had a simular problem. My 97' sebring Lxi would not start. I diagnosed the prob as a bad distributer, as it turns out it was the crankshaft position sensor. I am now having trouble with the same car.It is hard to start, has a dead spot just above an idle, and dies when you let off the gas to come to a stop. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. signed Skid seeker of answers.

My 1999 Sebring LXI was doing the same thing, acting like it was out of gas and would not start. Took it to my Mechanic who could not find anything wrong with anything, so he undid all the wiring and hooked everything back up again and to this day (knock on wood) it has been over  a year and no problems again! Plus he didnt even charge me because as he said-he doesnt know what he fixed!!!!

Well I guess I just have to jump right in and add my 97 Sebring LX to this. It was running fine and only after I turned on the A/C for a bit did it start running a bit rough. I came to a stoplight put it in nuetral and gunned the engine a bit. I took off with it running fine for about 100 ft. or so and then it started acting as if it was running on three cylinders. I had to have it towed home. The tow truck driver said that in his experience with these its usually been the fuel pump or something with the fuel system. Gee maybe we should all start a car club and call it the "Aint Runnins".

I recently had all the problems with my 1996 sebring jxi convertible. It would stumble on acceleration ocasionally. One day it stumbled and died. after it cooled down it started again
but only ran for less than a mile. I changed spark plugs, distributer cap rotor button, throttle position sensor, crank case sensor. then I tested every sensor in that engine compartment (from a parts car). Still no luck. Finally I changed the actual distributer and it worked. The distributer contains a coil pack which is a first for me. So if your car is doing this start with The distributor.

We have a 1999 Chrysler JXI Sebring 2.5 V6 and we had the same problem as many of these folks.  We put in a crank sensor and fixed the problem. However, now it is acting as if it is running out of gas. We will put in a fuel filter as soon as we find out where it goes. Hope that takes care of the problem

99 sebring... same here.. it would turn over fine, but not crank... I smelled the exaust while it was being cranked, and I could smell raw unburnt fuel.. so I checked the spark.. and it had no spark at all.. I replaced the disrtibutor cap and rotor button, the wires and plugs on the front side.. still the same thing..
next Im going to try the EGC sensor, after I get my friend to put it on the test machine for codes.

I recently bought a 98 sebring convertible 2.5 v6. I was driving it for pizza deliverly and it died on me at a stop light. I waited for about a half hour and it starts up fine like nothing was ever wrong. I'm so tired of this problem. I have been told it is a crank position sensor, and I have been told it is a fuel pump issue. I really dont want to spend the $400 to get a new (CPS) and I hope that it is a fuel pump issue.

my new 1997 21k mile convert sebring that i just bought was running rough then would not start in the driveway. my wonderful husband went out and disconnected the fuel line at the fuel rail and blew compressed air into it. now with the key on gas gushed out of the fuel line. he reconnected the line to the fuel rail the car started and runs fine. he told me to take it in and have tank drained and to fill with good gas.

My 99 sebring Lxi is randomly stalling.  The RMP gauge will suddenly drop down to 0, car seems to die and sometimes it kicks right back into driving.  If it stalls sometimes it takes a couple tries to start.  I have replaced the Solenoid Pak in the transmission, and the Valve body.  Mechanic drove it back to the dealership and the car died.  Now it won't start....  any ideas?  It has 78,000 miles and the Check Engine light is not reading correctly (So I was told)  Someone Help!!!

car stalls when it wants to, not when it's at the repair shop. stalls when idling or a few times on the highway and kicks back in. Usually starts up right away except a few times took about an hour. Being told it's a sparking issue and Chrysler needs to check the computer for $100 per hour.Maybe re-flash the motherboard or replace a chip maybe $120. New computer about $800. need some help

I have a 1999 Sebring coupe LXI and last September 1 I started it up and it was idling very roughly ( kinda revving) but I decided to drive it anyway and it cut off on me... I went to the dealership and got a whole new distributor system for over 1100 bucks! and not 6 months later it started the rough idling like before. Could it be the same problem?
