I want to process a shell variable in awk and return it to shell:

#!/bin/sh

while read nc
do
eval "$(awk -v string="$nc" 'BEGIN {num=split(string,a,"/")} {len=length(string)} {lenx=length(a[num])} {
printf "cdir=%s\n", substr(string,1,len-lenx-1)} END {printf "fnm=%s\n", a[num]}' )"

done < filename

everything is ok except that the while loop is only executed once (should be more than one)

How to fix the problem? Thank you very much
