Hi, I have a 2003 Passat and I get an oil/gas smell when the car is at a stand still. VW can't figure it out. My garage will stink 20 min after the car is off.

I have the same problem with my 1999 Passat. The oil ran dry and the dealer said it was a camseal problem. After fixing the camseal now its still gone dry and now the dealer is going to do a oil pressure to diagonize the problem. Also have the problem of oil smell when standstill.

It is your camshaft seals most likely.

I have a 2000 Passat wagon with V6.  I just took it in to a 3rd party mechanic for the oil smell/leak problem described above.  He told me it was cam seal leakage.  The car only has 25,000 miles on it.  Does anyone know if VW is taking care of problems like  this (at their expense) after warranty expires?

i have a 1999 passat turbo 4 and get an exhaust smell through the heater when stopped and blower is on.  Best I have been told is that the turbo over-pressure valve is leaking or has failed. The over pressure should not be released near the front of the car. No fix yet. nobody can actually find it. Exasperating!  Can stand it only because the rest of the car is absolutely the product of genius.  vlad (not the impaler)

I have a 1998 Passat 4cyl turbo. Same problem. It's been in 4 times and no remedy. did cam gasket I think (or head seal) and a piece of exhaust pipe before cal. converter. I don't kow how they think it's ever fixed when I can smell it after my 10 minute drive from shop to home. Frustrating enough to trade.

The problem is likely your PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system. The whole system rots quickly on a Passat (for whatever reason), especially the 4 cyl. turbo engines. If you smell fumes when your ventis on fresh air, but not when your vent is on recirculate, it is likely your PCV system. Good news is that the parts are relatively cheap and the engine doesn't have to come out to replace any of it.
