what is the studio's responsibility when a clients file is destroyed 6 months after the album project is paid for, mixed and released.

Depends on whether or not the studio supplied the client with a copy of the album.  If not, the studio might be liable for failing to exercise due diligence regarding the safekeeping of the client's intellectual property.

It's not clear how the client could be "made whole" in this case--probably a question for the courts to decide.

Frankly, though, I think the client was an idiot not to get a copy of the track masters before the completion of the project.
