I have 93/94 VW Gulf that sometimes cuts out when driving....

I have 93/94 VW Gulf that sometimes cuts out when driving. The RAC have checked it and said it might be the amplifier? The engine has restarted on all but one occasion as soon as I turn the key. Any ideas?
