I have a 5 month old, and we are seriously considering neutering. This summer we ran into someone who has owned several doxies throughout his life and he informed us that we should not neuter because it would be bad for their backs. Is there any shred of truth to this? We know of the importance of neutering and our male is just starting to mark our outside property, not inside yet. Plus, I heard this should be done at 5-6 months, is this correct for this breed?

The only thing I can think of as why someone would say that neutering a male dachshund would be bad for their back is the misconception that neutering a dog makes them fat. An overweight doxie is at serious risk of back problems. If you do not plan to stud your dog, I would suggest neutering him BUT KEEP AN EYE ON HIS WEIGHT!
