I was told that the origin of the pit bull was a result of cross breading to create a bear hunting machine. Is that remotely true?

you may be thinking of a staffordshire terrier which was used for baiting bulls along with a variety of other animals(including bears), not hunting though. the bear, bull, badger, wolverine, or god knows what else was chained in the middle of a ring or "pit" while it was attacked by four or five other dogs. the staffordshire terrier was then brought to america and bred with a variety of other dogs to create the pit bull that we know today, which is quite a bit larger than the staffordshire terrier, or staffie as they are often called. they usually only weighed between 30-45 pounds.

No pit bulls are really well made for bull baiting.

Airedale Terriers were the bear/lion hunting dogs(used with a few hounds too). If you watch the movie The Bear the dog that dies is an Airedale.

Irish terriers, Bedlington terriers are both able to kill badgers and good fighters too. But these dogs are not agressive toward people. I have had Airedales that could fight
just about anything but would never hurt a human.

Pits rock not just for the fighting (cause I see just as good or better in Airedales) but their willingness to attack anything (even human) to protect you.

I'd heard that the pit bull was a cross between a bull terrier([Chico], the dog on Next Friday) and a american bull dog. I also, read that american pitbull was bread to pull, sort of a work dog. The lock jaw and attitude of the dog just came extra as a free gift. I bought my first pit from a family who used two pits to keep the live stock in check.

no question that the american pit are the king of the ring. they are so common here in the USA. i have a bullie all white that acts like a american pit down to the sheer jaw strenght, it would hold its on with a pit. but i would not take a chance geting my bullie hurt. they are to expensive here$$$
but a pit would go the distance while a bullie would tire out quicker. this is what i hear!

A Bullterrier is a very tough dog, but it is nothing like the fighting machine a Pit Bull is.  Bullterriers' heads are not even constructed to hold on to another animal very long.  Their noses are too close to their mouth and they need to break their holds just to catch a breath.  That is why they were replaced by Staffordshires in the ring so long ago.  For those of you into fighting dogs so much read a little bit about a breed called Caucasus Ovcharka.  In Kazakstan, Turkmenistan, Kyrghyzstan (central asia) where dog fighting is both legal and part of the culture, these dogs are the kings of the ring, even against Pit Bulls.  No kidding, they don't win just some of the time with Pits, but almost all the time.

For you dog fighters. I'm not into having my pet chewed up by another animal and quite frankly I prefer my dogs a little on the larger side so I have English Mastiffs. But, when it comes to fighting are you forgetting about the Sharpei they will tear up any dog.

Lots and lots of talking about what dog could whip a pit. Well I hate to tell you but if there was a dog out there that could fight better than a pit, everybody would use IT for fighting INSTEAD of the pit.  People put tons of money down on a dogfight.  If there was any dog out there that could consistently whip a pit, my neighbors would be fighting them, and making loads of money.  Even in other countries, where there is little development and the only pits to be found are scrawny, poorly bred, poorly conditioned, and poorly trained, the pitbull still isn't beaten by other breeds consistently, only very rarely.  They are the only dog out there that has been bred for fighting and nothing else for hundreds of years.

I relize Im a little late with an answer John, but I have a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and he has hung on a swing pole for about 10-12 minutes before. He hangs so long that I have to get him off before he dehydrates. Also he is 36 lbs and got a hold of my friends 70 lbs Boxer and wouldnt let go. Im 6 foot 4 with large biceps and I was chopping him straight to the snout and he wouldnt let go. So dont tell me their snout isnt designed to hold a bite. Talking about fighting bull terriers and pits is tricky, it all depends on which one gets the neck clamp first.

Ok, mabey a bit of an exageration.  But still the best dog for the job.  I know people who could easily drop twenty grand on a dog and it wouldn't matter a bit.  If there was a dog out there that was more suitable for the job, they would already have had 10 of them mailed to them in crates.  There is no dog out there that can consistently whip a pit.  Period.  End of discussion.  Oh, and about insulting your intelligence, I would say that with all the stupid comments and stupid people I just expected my little exageration to be overlooked.

I'll tell you, the stuff written on these sites, about how this dog or that dog could "destroy" an APBT never loses its amusement.  Always a good laugh.  You'll have these kids that get on these sites and swear up and down how their Rottweiler, Shar Pei, American Bulldog, Chow, Bull Terrier, Staffie, Am-Staff, etc. etc. etc. could, or did, beat an APBT.  First of all, anyone with any REAL experience with REAL game dogs knows this is ridiculous crazy talk.  Besides incredible tenaciousness, agility, bite strength, and deep desire to fight, the American Pit Bull Terriers possesses another certain quality that makes them superior in the pit.  GAMENESS.
No other breed could exert such energy, for such a period of time, while severely injured, and not quit.  Despite being severely injured, and severely exhausted, the APBT keeps going.  He stays on task.  He is determined.  That, is Gameness.
Every last one of the breeds you see people on these sites claim would defeat an APBT, would cur within a matter of minutes against a real fastlane APBT.  As a matter of fact, a real Dogman wouldn't even match a game APBT with any other dog but another APBT.  It is cruel and unnecessary.  Some say they would never match anything but another APBT with their game dogs because it can cause bad fighting habits.  Although I have heard of Dogmen allowing one of their game dogs to go to town on some persistent big mouths American Bulldog, or Akita etc. just to shut him up and teach him the lesson that only an APBT can defeat an APBT.  It's a shame that some idiot would put his pet in a pit with an APBT simply because they think their dog is "tough" because it killed a Rottweiler at a dog park, or killed the neighbors Saint Bernard, or even some tough LOOKING Am-staff.  Totally different ball game.
The bottom line is, the American Pit Bull Terrier is the ultimate fighting dog.

NewJerseyrocks, if any of your comments were directed my way, I'd like to enlighten you a bit on my stance on Dog Fighting.  I DO NOT fight dogs.  As a matter of fact, I do not even presently own an APBT.  I own a male Doberman and a female Bull Terrier.
Where I grew up, Dog Fighting was very common, and seemingly normal.  I don't even remember the first Dog Fight I ever saw.  As far as Dogmen obtaining APBT'sto boast their ego, or to make up for what they are lacking in their pants is simply way off target.  I am not doubting the fact that there are people out there who do live vicariously through their pet bull or other "tough dog" breed.  However, this is not the case with real Dogmen.  Dogmen created, and to this day are refining this breed for a very specific purpose.  They did not go searching for a dog to fill a self confidence void, or to aid an inferiority complex.
Unfortunately too many kids grow up desensitized to this extremely cruel activity.  Most of which are children of Dogmen, and organized Dog Fighting is passed down from generation to generation.
As I got older, it became clear how horrendous Dog Fighting was, and believe it or not the actual matches are what bothered me the least.  The treatment of the dogs, the lack of nutrition and proper care, the lack of health care after a dog is fought, the physical and mental abuse, and of course the daily living conditions most game dogs are subject to.  I do however, recognize this breed would not be here today had it not been for Dog Fighting.  There is also nothing wrong with admiring the APBT'smagnificent "gameness" trait.  As long as one does not exploit this trait, and it is properly harnessed and directed in a positive manner, I believe recognition of this trait is a must.  I also encourage all APBT owners to keep in mind both the advantages and the drawbacks of this trait at all times.

pits are excellent fighting dogs cause of theirprey drive... cause thats what they were originally, hunters. And then someone said ...."Hey people will probablylike seeing these dogs hunt in public" and then someone said lets charge an entrance fee and then let people bet on the outcome. Pits are great but usually people use pits not cause their the best everywhere its mostly cause theyare an extremely common dog and their not difficult to obtain. If you go to different countries youllprobably see other top dogs some probably not better then a pit...  but a  game pit wont always win against another game bred dog just cause it isnt a pit. so these pits were used to kill other animals in the ring but remebers that the bear was usually chained AND had its eyes gouged among other things. Pits are great but they and in general they are the best fighters butthat doesnt mean that the best fighter is always a pit.

Dog fighting isn't based upon the "toughest" dog.  Most of the dogs fought are small.  It's a matter of economics.  Most dog fighters are low lifes and barely make a living.  They are mostly found in rural communities where they can live in a house for a couple hundred a month.  There's also gangs that have dogs.  You can't find a match if you have a huge dog.

The money is on the bets.  The original dogs used for fighting in Europe...the ones that were brought to Japan ... were retired because they were to expensive to feed.  The pit was bred to be a small dog.  It's not so tough because no pit bull has ever killed a healthy human adult in the USA (see THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA, Plaintiff and Appellant,v. MARJORIE F. KNOLLER, Defendant and Respondent. A099366
(Related Case Nos. A099250 & A099499)
San Francisco County Superior Court No. 18181301 The Honorable James L. Warren, Judge)

As for the "bear baiting" above, the dogs didn't KILL the bears...the bears killed the dogs, sometimes hundreds in a day. The dogs would be replaced as they were killed.
http://www.fact-index.com/b/be/bear_baiting.html

Pit bulls orginated from economic necessity.  If they fought only the toughest animals, they would fight lions or bears.  Cost is a factor.  An owner of a pit will not fight a bigger dog.  There are archives of pit fights and you can read them....the dogs were always evenly matched and the matches RARELY resulted in serious injury or death.

Bah, it's all dependent on the dog and the way it's been raised. Temperament, bloodline (VERY important, if they're inbred they tend to be dumb, and that never helps with fighting, as they can't be trained WHEN to and when not to, plus they simply go into a frenzy biting and thrashing with no precision - watch the dogs at a fight, the ones to put money on don't bark, they just whine a little and have this look like "pleeeease let me get him NOW" in their eyes. They don't NEED to bark and bluff. It's all on a dog per dog basis. I've seen sharpei'swhoop pits, I've seen a Staffordshire pit take that same sharpei, then later on a different day, that same sharpei that kicked the pit's a$$ was nearly killed by a different APBT. They were all of similar weights, it's a lot of things.  Chance, for one, training, muscle, discipline (so they don't go into total uncontrolled blood-lust), feeding, exercise, a whole slew of factors. Saying an APBT is "better" than another breed in a fight is like saying a Chevy is "faster" than a Ford. Well that depends, are you comparing say, a little metro to a Mustang? Or are you comparing Corvette to a ford tempo? It's not a universal truth. Same goes for dogs. Personally? I don't understand the point of fighting dogs, it's just... so futile, and hurts the animals more than it's worth. (BTW I work as a veterinary tech now, and see WAY too many injured dogs from fights, and although I've seen LOTS of things in the past, I no longer associate with any fighting rings, and consider it a somewhat darker section of my past, and it shames me to have even gone there for amusement and betting. It's just not fair to the dogs.) Oh yeah, and my half Icelandic Pomeranian (ACA, show quality and he knows it) could take 'em ALL! AND he gets all the girls! *sarcastic grin*

Wow, some of you are just way out there.  I am not claiming to know much about pits....but some of you think you know what your talking about and really you don't.  Pits were not bred for the ability to rip something in half but better yet for their ability to not give up no matter the cost.  Pits were tested and bred for their GAMENESS!! Bred for being  Loyal dogs, friendly, affectionate, loving animals. (I have owned several)  They were not bred to stick in a rink with another dog equal, lesser whatever.  For those of you not knowing what GAMENESS is, maybe you should use your internet to look it up.  I do not agree with dog fighting, it is sick and it is illegal!!!!

but in terms of strength...i think tosa breed is quite strong compare to other breeds...BUT that is because of their size... they can weight up to over 70 kg...
of course a 70 kg animal can easily defeat a mere 30 kg to 40 kg animal...so, think... you can never compare the dogs like that... they are different and unique in their own ways... and we dont have to force them fight either...

With respect to what Chip said, another important aspect of a fight between one dog and another is center of gravity.  Better fighting dogs tend to be smaller, not so much for financial reasons, but because a dog that is low to the ground can more easily defend its throat, and more easily attack an opponent.

At one point, I owned both a 100+ pound German Shepherd (a female, very large for her sex/breed) and a 25-ish pound Cairn Terrier, who had lived some time as a stray, and obviously had some experience in handling other dogs on the street.  I say obviously because during fights (I don't fight my dogs, they were playing around) the little guy shot in fast and low, grabbed the shepherd by the throat, and downed her, latching on and not letting go for several minutes.  The shepherd couldn't do anything, and the terrier wouldn't let go until I broke it up.  Damndest thing I'd ever seen, but no blood and no real harm done, except about 100 pounds of bruised ego.

So, as you can see, a smaller dog can use its size to its advantage in a way that a larger dog cannot.  Thus, it is my belief that keeping dogs within a certain, smaller size is a priority among fighting dog breeders for this reason.

Pitbulls come from a cross breeding of Staffordshire terriers, Bulldogs, and Alanos(A dog from Spain...LOOK IT UP). The ones with the larger heads have more Bulldog and Alon in them and the shorter smaller head ones are more Staffodshire. The "Pit " in the name come from Europe where the used them for rodent hunting. They would put 3-5 Pitbulls in a "PIT" with a bunch of rats and the one which caught the most was the winner.

I can't believe what I am reading.  First off, most of you need to really go back to school and learn to spell.  Maybe a little grammar...

Second off, the only person who even has it right is Fastlane (and one other, I can't remember the nick).

American Pit Bull Terriers were originally bred, before being even called American Pit bull Terriers for farm protection and bull baiting, as well as hog hunting.  When bull baiting was outlawed, lower class people sought a new form of amusement with these dogs, thus creating dog fighting.  These dogs were called "Bull & Terrier's".  They were a cross between the original bulldog and white terriers in england.  When they came to America, they were called American Bull Terriers.  When the founder of the UKC wanted to start his own kennel club to register his "American Bull Terriers" that is what he called them.  It was later that the name was changed to American PIT Bull Terriers so that they wern'tconfused with the Bull Terrier.

The dogs that remained in England and were bred in England were called Staffordshire Bull Terriers (originating from the same stock as the American Bull Terrier, or Pit Bull) because of the most popular dog fighting town there, Stafford.

When people wanted to register their APBT's(American Pit Bull Terriers) with the AKC, the AKC said no, because the name would "dirty" their registry because it was associated with the dog fighting pit.  So, some people came up with the genius idea to rename the breed of their dogs and register them as a new breed with the AKC, thus creating the American Staffordshire Terrier.

Here's the deal.  The ADBA is the only registry that doesn't believe that the American Staffordshire Terrier is the same breed as the American Pit Bull Terrier.  And in present day, I don't believe it is.  I do however, believe that the show bred APBT and the AmStaff (American Staffordshire terrier) are the same breed.  you can register an AKC AmStaff with the UKC as an APBT.  And, if memory serves me right (correct me if I am wrong) if you breed a UKC APBT with an AKC AmStaff you can register the puppies in the AKC as AmStaffs.  Therefore, making them the same breed.  Now, the Game bred APBT is no where near the same as an AmStaff.  They look completely different, as the AmStaff is bred only for looks, and the Game bred APBT is bred for performance, looks being set aside.

Hope that clears up some stuff for those of you who actually care about more than fighting.  Because even while these dogs were bred for fighting, there were those that were still only bred for farm protection and hunting purposes and never used to fight.

I believe that all dog-fighters should have their asses beaten to a pulp, then forced to wear a suit made of fresh steak, have their hands and legs tied, and then thrown into a fighting pit with all of the dogs that they have mistreated. And that would be the EASY way out compared to what I would do to any dog fighter that crosses my path.

bull bread are not made to fight they are bull biting dogs.
go to the library and make you research. the reason people fight pit is because they can't afort another dog.

I had 2 pit bulls and they were both killed by a bull terrier female 86 pound dogs.
bull terriers are very dangerous, people don't know that because they are very rare here. the country that started it all was UK and they only fight bull terriers.make your reseach and you will find with in the ultimate fighting dog.

Personally I think the APBT is probably the best all around fight dog out there. Specially if it is “game”. I have had Boxers now for 10 years and I can tell you that a Boxer can cause allot of problems for allot of breeds on a good day. I do not fight my dogs but unfortunately they have been in fights that have been out of my control. The one that comes to mind the most is back in January of 05 I was out with my 2 ˝ Male boxer and and some guys in the neighbor hood that had been terrorizing dogs with their APBT let their dog go. I hadnt’t even realized what was going on but I release my dog from his leash because it was only fair to him that he is able to move freely.   To make a long story short my Boxer almost killed the pit. I was surprised because I thought the worst and my concern was for my Boxer. I should have been more concerned with the APBT. Don’t sleep on the Boxer breed because they can for sure hold their own.

The APBT is, without a doubt, the toughest dog out there! PERIOD!
I have an uncle in Canada who owns 4 APBT's on a farm. Years ago (early 90's), one of his calves got attacked and killed by a small pack of wolves (he said 4 or 5 wolves). He had 1 APBT at the time, and it simply attacked the wolves, killing 3 of them in a few minutes. Remember, the wolves were more than twice the APBT's size, vicious, wild animals who killed prey on a regular basis.
His dog had almost no injuries.
He even has pictures of the dead wolves (in 1 of them the Pit has a wolf by the neck, which was the last one to get killed).
Not only that, but his APBT has even killed a wolverine, which is also bigger than the pit, and pound for pound the deadliest carnivore in existence (bears, wolves and mountain lions are afraid, and will NOT attack wolverines).
Show me another breed of dog that is capable of anything halfway close to that!

why all this talk about the dogs performance in the ring?I think that the pitbull has showed it time and time again.SO NEXT TIME YOU ARE WALKING YOUR SO CALLED KING OF THE RING AND YOU SEE A PIT.JUST KNOW THAT EVEN IN YOUR DOGS MIND THE PITBULL IS GOING TO WIN THAT FIGHT ALL AROUND.SO KINDLY STEP ASIDE AND WE WILL DO THE SAME.PITS DONT HAVE A FIGHTING REP FOR NOTHING. THIS IS MY ADVICE FOR ANY DOG OWNER.THE PIT HAS PROVEN IT TIME AND TIME AGAIN ALL OTHER DOG HAVE HAD THIER DAY IN THE SPOTLIGHT.BUT NOT VERY OFTEN SO DONT RISK IT. ITS UNFORTUNATE THAT SOMEONE WOULD WANT TO PUT THIER DOG IN THAT TYPE OF SITUATION. YOU WOULD NOT WANT TO STEP INTO THE CAGE WITH A KILLER UNLESS YOU YOURSELF HAD A KILLER INSTINCT. SO WHY LET YOUR GUARD DOG STEP INTO THE RING WITH A KILLER NO MATTER THE SIZE.

k think i must that up afew times but anyways, i also agree with fastlane, i have a pit but hes no fighter I'mnot into that junk but i have seen them plenty of times a friend raisesthem on a farm and i have seen alot of other so called game dogs, but never in my life have i seen the pure will to win, in any other dog then a pit there none stop agression is far beyond most dogs and if even he is aggressive as a pit, i fail to see the shear pain thresh hold of any other dog, i'mno expert but what i have seen out of 40-45 pound pits simply amaze'sme. About fighting them, well thats what they were bread for, alot of humans feal they made for boxing or full contact/MMA or for some that dont know either the more pop. would be UFC, but hey thats ok cause we have a self consence and animals dont right? or do they, maybe we just force them to behave that way!? Heres the question if pits were to run in the wild as a pack what do you think they would do?
What they would look for?  Or hunt to eat? Or maybe both for sport and food, cause thats what there good at!

Ha ha ha you are all kids.
The pitbull is pound for pound one of the ( not best ) the best fighter. So for it to beat a tosa it would have to be around the same weight, but they aren't so it would just end up with its face chewed off by a 200 pound tosa smashing it to the ground. I noticed alot of you saying the pit is the best as it's used more than any other fighting breef..Fact!!! But the reason is , they are so cheap to buy and train...meaning even the poor can get involded...the tosa is for the rich....
An irish staff weighing the same as a pitbull will rip it to bits....reason? they are the same dog ...but the irish staff is used still for badger baiting and coursing in ireland..only the best are bred....but the american is just a pet!!!!

In my house, my sister has 2 red nose pits and I have 2 Alaskan Malamutes. They are always separated and cannot socialize because the male pit and the male malamute are both intact. The pit is 65lbs w/ a 22" skull. the Malamute is 82lbs. They have met accidentally several times, the Malamute always has and always will wipe the floor with either pit, and he once fought off both at the same time, injuring one in the process, and came out un-harmed. You see, arctic dogs have a mane of hair that any dog will find difficult to penetrate. They also have notable strength and THE strongest predatory instinct of ANY breed. The fact that nobody has mentioned the Alaskan Malamute is laughable at best. Next time your pit scraps with a Mal, my advice is call a vet, fast. Your pit will thank you

Why would anyone want to fight a pit bull?  I have a pit bull and she is the sweetest dog ever.  Pit bulls ARE NOT people aggressive.  If they become people aggressive, they need to be euthanized!  The problem with pit bulls are the ignorant people that take care of them!  Instead of pit bulls being banned, I think owners who hone their pits to fight should be banned.

HAVE YOU EVEN EVER ROLLED A DOG IN THE YARD, DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. IT'S ALL IN THE BLOODLINE AND THE CORRECT TRAINING. IF YOU HAVE A CUR PIT, YOU CAN NEVER MAKE THAT DOG GAME. I'VE SEEN PITS WHINE AND CRY IN PAIN IN MINUTES AND I HAVE SEEN THE GAME PITS FIGHT IN THE BOX FOR OVER 3 HOURS.  AND BY THE WAY, PITS DO NOT HAVE A LOCKING JAW, THEY RELEASE AN ENZYME INTO THEIR BODY WHICH MAKES THEM HOLD FOREVER AND THERE IS TWO WAYS TO BREAK THE HOLD AND THAT IS BREAKING STICKS IF USED PROPERLY AND WATER DOWN THE SNOUT WILL GET THEM TO RELEASE. PITS CAN BE YOUR BEST FRIEND TOO, NOT JUST A MONEY MAKING MACHINE.

This is real.  The "apbt" Pitbull was first brought to the US in the mid to late 1800's by english and irish immigrants.  The dogs were bred BulldogXterrier to perform in baiting activities, dog v. bull, dog v. dog, dog v. rats, etc.  The pitbull was a very popular dog from the beginning in the US due to it's strength and gameness and dog fighting became a popular, socially accepted past time.  As the social views of the country have changed, so have the views on dog fighting.  The UKC was founded as valid registration for apbt's and even sanctioned fights through the mid 20th cent, and the AKC has opened it's stud books 3 times to APBT's so the staffy could have some new blood.  This may be the most misunderstood animal in the history of the world. IMO the apbt is the breed most representative of our country via values and history but we have chosen to attack it as a menace.  For those of you out there who are irresponsible with your dogs, take heed.  You will lose the right to own them.  The "Dead Game" dog has a place and a right to survive.  Study your breed and act accordingly.  It is not a sign of ones machismo but a valiant and noble animal.  The Colby strain has survived (validated) in this country for over 100 yrs.  Find me one other line of one other breed that can claim the same.
P.S. I have never owned an apbt

Back to the original question.  Pit bulls or the fore father of the APBT were not bread to be the ultimate bear hunting machine.  They were used in bear and bull baiting.  Bear was usually chained and either declawed and/or muzzled or/and they used a boat load of dogs.  Terriers are not good big game hunting dogs.  As others have mentioned they are very game dogs and will go to the death.  So when you let any dog close on the king of beasts its always fatal.  And don't pull the Ridgeback crap out because they didn't close on the lions either.  They just bayed the lion until the hunter could shoot it.  I'll have to agree that the APBT is the greatest fighting dog.  Follow the money!!!  That's how I know there isn't anything special about the Bermuda triangle.  They marine insurance is the same to ship things through there as anywhere else.  So stop whining about the APBT if you don't like them you don't like them but they are the best at fighting end of story.  By the way I don't condone fighting and I'm not a fan of the breed.

It's usually the master that loves for the dog to fight. I love the breed for their intelligence, and cuddleability. I have 3 pitbulls and they do everything together. Eat, sleep, shi#. If pitbulls did nothing but live for a good fight this would not be possible.

It's obvious here who actually knows the pit game.  It's not about the biggest toughest meanest dog.  Game is something else alltogether.  The game and courage, even in a losing fighter is something special; worth much more than these big rough tough killer wolves people are sucking.  Also on another note, the dogs are not forced to fight.  There are rules and even a ref.  It is just like a boxing match top to bottom.  If your dog doesn't want to fight the match is over.  It is not a torture show. Recently saw a match go over the 3 hour mark with never a sign of a quitter.  Will your killer wolf do that?

The APBT is well known worldwide as the "champion" amongst fighters. For the most part this is true. Alot of the information in the posts here are true, but most of the information here is just speculation. Small pitbulls are more commonly found in the pit"fighting ring" because of their very high stamina, the larger the dog the more quickly it will tire and just the opposite for the smaller "game" pitbulls.

One very untrue statement on here is that a pit owner would not match his dog against a larger dog, this is just absolutely untrue, in fact it is just the opposite, it is the larger dogs owner that does not want to match against the smaller dog. If this doesn't make sense to you check this out, lets say you have an average pitbull say 60 pounds and I have my ever so gamey harley that weighs in at a mere 41 pounds. The smaller dog automatically has the advantage because the smaller dog has the ideal advantage of getting straight to the larger dogs throat.

Another misconception I have read here is that of the so called "locking jaw". The pit doesn't have locking jaws, no dog does, the pit just has the drive to not want to let go of the object that it is holding on to be it a spring pole or another dogs leg or neck.

APBT are great for pulling, a 37 pound female pulled over 4500 pounds over 100 feet, that is pure strength, to put that in perspective that is roughly the equivalent of an F-250 ford pickup pulling a US navy aircraft carrier, now that is pure strength and to whomever thought the Irish Wolfhound was a strong dog, your dogs back shoulders would have given out before it ever moved the 4500 pounds a foot!

Strength, Power, Unmatched Stamina combined with Loyalty, and the Willpower to resist pain and the drive to only please its owner are what set the pitbull apart from any other breed. And anyone that wants to throw any other breed of dog be it Rottweiller, Doberman, Akita, or whatever breed you want it to be including crossbreeds they just don't match up well with the pit and although the other breed may get the upper hand and win once in a while I put my money on the conditioned seasoned pitbull to win 98 out of 100 fights with other breeds, fighting to the death not just a little back yard scrap, I personally don't know anyone willing to put $5000 on another breed to fight a pit to the death. it just would be better to give your money away and keep your inferior skilled breed alive. bar-none

iv got a english pitbull fairly young would never dream of fighting it even tho it is very powerfull dog and they guy who said his Englishbull terriers would take any pitdown i would do some research on Dog fighting befor you come on a site and say your dogs could take any pitbull down, and for those who say american pitbulls are more powerfull than any other breed of pit, how come they still legal in the uk and english pits arnt? please answer this? im pretty confused?  tosa'swernt bred for fighting they where bred For work pretty much the same as the pitbull, used not just for fighting but also being a family dog working on a farm and other jobs, there Breed Pitbull does not make the Dog a fighter because of its breed! its the owner! all dogs will fight all dogs can be family friendly also!

pitbulls where NOT bread for fighting at all thay where bread for hunting and working the head and jaws are for sticking in a rabbit hole or anything along that line. they will grab there pray and thrash them like a gator does to its food. Also the bulk is for work  on farms and around the house And above all they where bread for families easy dog to train loyal to there master and very protective of there territory even more when the master and his family is around. So for all those who thinke thay where bread for fighting you are wrong there is no dog bread for fighting. AT ALL they are only trained to fight .the only dog that might be in this catorgory is a doberman pincher.witch was breed for killing humans or protecting the kings and queens

These have got to be some of the most stupid people alive today , The answers given are ridiculous . The Serbian Defense
dogs kill the most game pitbulls on a regular basis . Check it out . There are
many dogs that can kill a gamebred pit . But the most consistent fighting machine is a an american pitbulol terrier . Only the serbian defense dog is better .

lol your so silly a tossa dog will beat an american pitbull 55 pound below, anythink 55plus would tear the tossa limb from limb, thats why they were used. dog fighting is wrong and cruel, but the pitbull is in class of its own for its strength, courage, loyalty and stamina. there wonderful pets, its a shame that some people had too spoil it for us all

pitbulls are in a class of their own with their desire too please, strength and stamina. the reason they are used in such fights is this desire too please, where most dogs would give up, these dogs fight till the end, people who put dogs in fights are sick, pitbulls are very gentle dogs and great with kids they are extremely carefully about what they pit in their mouths and careful on what they bite on.

Wow, it's 2006 and I have just come across this childish forum from 2004.  Too bad many of the responses on here are from children that have very little knowledge of the breeds they are speaking in regards to.  Many of my friends have own(ed) American Staffordshire's and true they are great fighters.  My experience though is that Bull Terrier's and Chinese Shar-Pei's are just as fierce and dedicated to fighting as any ASBT and can hold their own.  I have owned a Male Bull Terrier, Female Mini Bull Terrier and currently own a Shar-Pei.  None have ever fought, except the Male Bullie when an American Staffordshire jumped out fence.  Let me tell you, the Staffordshire was lucky to get away with only missing an inch of fur from it's backbone.  All in all, it's the dog and it's temperament.  Not all ASBT will win every time, or lose every time.

I don't know why everyone is talking about fighting pitbulls... the reason the government wants to ban APBTs is because "people" train these dogs to be aggressive and it usually ends up that they turn on their owners in the end... or do to excessive fighting the dog undergoes stress or mental abuse and doesn't know what he/she is doing because it is use to being in the pit... and when it gets loose, anything that moves is the prey... In the past month I have been active with over 30 "peaceful" APBTs. I play with them all everyday, I help give them water, and I take them for walks... These dogs are good dogs (except when I had to try for an hour to get the one off of the spring pole). Don't get me wrong, pits are very game dogs... but are not meant to be fought. It is cruel for them... How would you feel if you were put in a room with someone else to fight them against your will just for someone else's pleasure... I go down to the shows... We cant let the government do this... Don't give them a reason!

There are alot of A.P.B.T fancier's who for a long time believed there to be no crosses at all being made and that the A.P.B.T. is the actual "Bulldog" no crosses being made mainly because to cross the "Bullldog" to another breed one would risk losing the trait that separated the dog from all the other breeds, "Gameness" {the ability to continue to want to fight regardless of the amount of fatigue or punishment it would be put under by the beast it would be bringing down}. The mere fact that the"Bullldog" was bred for fighting tells one that it already was a very agile breed due to it's origin of purpose. Breeding a small dog of one breed to another small dog of the same breed to achieve a smaller breed in order not to lose it's already existing traits would be the best way to achieve a smaller dog rather than breeding it to a different breed to achieve the same goal. This is a relatively new theory wich was first published "not the originator" by Richard F. Stratton.I feel that that the new theory is more likely to have happened yet it is just a "theory" as is the original.I applaud all theory"s concerning the A.P.B.T. and wish you all well for we are all fancier's of the same breed, the A.P.B. T. thank you.

I TRUTHFULLY THINK THAT WHEN PEOPLE FIGHT THEIR DOGS, IT IS A SHAME,IT REALLY MAKES ME MAD.I THINK THE PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE FOR THOSE ACTIONS SHOULD BE PLACED IN A RING AND FOUGHT TILL THEY ARE MAIMED OR NEAR DEATH,EVEN THOUGH THATS WHAT THEY PARTIALLY BRED THEM FOR IT STILL DOESN'T MAKE IT RIGHT. THEY ALREADY HAVE A BAD REP.I HAVE BEEN RAISING PITS FOR 8 YEARS AND RAISED MY DOGS LIKE ANY OTHER DOG,AND HAVE HAD ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS WITH AGGRESSION OR HOSTILITY.THEY ARE LOYAL PROTECTORS OF THEIR MASTERS,AND MAKE GREAT FAMILY ORIENTED COMPANIONS.FOR THOSE OUT THERE WHO THINK ITS RIGHTEOUS TO FIGHT THEIR DOGS JUST THINK OF IT AS YOUR KIDS!WOULD YOU PUT YOUR KID IN A RING AND FIGHT HIM/HER TILL THEY ARE BRUTALLY MAIMED OR NEAR DEATH?

I would like to say to all of you who fight or have ever fought a dog,  you are a very sick person.  This behavior is cruel and I wish that all of you would go to jail where you could be thrown in a ring and tortured!!!  I'm sure that you would not like that very much at all.  For anyone to be able to watch another living creature be harmed in any way is just the most horrible thing that you could ever do.  It may not happen any time soon, but some day you will pay for what you have harmed.  I have an Pit Bull and she is one of the most beautiful dogs I have ever owned.  I could not imagine ever doing anything like that to her.  You all need help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

first, pits aren't the toughest dogs. the reason why pits are commonly used for fighting is their tenacity. to those hard core single-minded pit fans, try fighting a pit and a rott and let's see who wins.

tosas are not the strongest dogs in fights. study up on these japanese fights wich tosas were used for. the dog was not allowed to make any noise if it did it would be disqualified. there was no biting involved it was mainly wrestling much like asumo so do not say tosas are the strongest fighting dog and calling people stupid you should at least learn how to spell it

End of it depends on the dog and who gets whos throat first. Yes attributtes of a dog  can get an approximate or consistent decision on whos harder BUT it all depends on what happens on the day.

I have 10 WereWolves in my house that wud maul any dog. A werewolves cock could kill any dog. And thats alowed as all dogs are from the wolf yehhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've read thru the blogs here I'm not a dog fighter nor do I promote dog fighting but it's ironic that of all the breeds here being mentioned as the superior dog fighting dog they all share lineage to the original bulldog which is exstinct.  All dogs including the tosa, presa canary, and various others mentioned share a deep lineage to the original bulldog which happens to be exstinct and the truth of the matter a fighting dog is no different than a prize fighter if properly matched by weight it all comes down to which fighter wants it the most point blank.

Believe it or not, when it comes down to, pound for pound that's just how it is!
