The same happened to my chocolate lab.  I called the vet, and he said to bring Chip in right away, as the cause may be a hemotoma, a rupture of the artery in the ear.  It turned out that the cause was some sort of allergy.  Chip got a cortisone shot, and I gave him anti-biotics and prednisone for a week.  The swelling went down within 24 hours.  Hope this helps.

My lab kept ears like that when she was younger.  She got it from shaking her head violently (as some dogs do).  Sometimes, she would hit her ears when walking by things and shaking at the same time.  My vet said it was causing fluid to build up  between the 2 layers of skin in the ears.  He drained them and all was well. good luck

My Chocolate lab was scratching his ears a lot and I took him to the vet and he told me that my dog had a yeast infection in his ear, as many labs do because it is hard to keep the water out of their ears because they love the water. The vet gave him some ear drops and it cleared up but he also told me that those breed of dogs keep a yeast infection because of their love for water.

I just noticed my boxer puppy is not acting like himself.  His ears are all swollen but he had been shaking his head.  I gave him benadryl and plan on going to vet first thing in the morning.  I think its possible its a yeast infection because he has floppy ears and I noticed a discharge and cleaned them earlier this week.

My 10 month has a large lump on her withers.  Vet said she hit something or something hit her.  Said to wait a couple of weeks to see if it goes down, if not he would sedate and put in drainage tubes.

I have prednisone on hand.  Can I try and what dosage.  I had thought about an aspirin for inflammation.

My puppy has very waxy ears, and my vet told me that the waxy buildup could be from water getting into his ears.  She also told me never to wash his ears with soap and water because it doesn't evaporate correctly and increases the problem.  You can pick up ear cleanser at any pet store... R7 ear cleaner is the best.  it only costs like, 5 bucks.  hope this helps.

I have a Golden that has had constant yeast infections. Tried Conofite Liquid from vet but helped little. Recently started using Q-tips dipped in rubbing alcohol (91%) to clean ears every night before bed, and ears cleared dramatically in 3 days. Moistness was removed and brown yeasty muck turned flaky. I will continue to clean daily for several more days until there is no sign of brown muck and then see what happens.

you can use a 1 to 1 ratio of white vinigar and water to gently clean and flush the dogs ears. I also heard that you can use womens over the counter yeast medication after cleaning too.

My choc lab had the same "thick ear" symptoms five days ago.  We were out of town so I called the vet and she told me to give her regular adult Benadryl.  Within 24 hours all swelling was gone and hasn't been back since.

my beagle's ear all of a sudden looked like a balloon. I called the vet and it sounds like a blood vessel broke in his ear.  I do have to bring him in to get it drained.  It doesn't bother him at all.  A broken blood vessel can be caused by a dog merely shaking his head a lot/too hard.  It think Duke's is a result of running into a old wire coat hanger that I was about to discard.

Last night, we discovered our chocolate lab has one spongy ear and I was very worried.  We are going to the vet this afternoon.  Three days ago, he had swollen eyes and we gave him Benadryl and the swelling went down, so I do believe it is allergy related.

Jonnie,
As far as  home remidies for your dogs yeast infection in it's ear try keeping it clean by mixing half hydrogen peroxide and water to clean the ear and use cortizone cream a couple times a week maybe once at the start of the week and again at the end of the week. Hope this helps you.
