Actually, the original song lyrics were written by EH Harburg and the music by Harold Arlen for the MGM Movie "The Wizard of Oz". Judy Garland just happened to sing the song in the movie, she didn't create it.

About 15 years ago, I heard a version of sotr that was unlike any I had ever heard.  There was a discussion after the song was sung by the moderator, explaining that Arlen intended the arrangement to be as complicated as the version that was what I just heard.  I don't know who the vocalist or the arranger was, but it was an incredible arrangement and good vocal.  If anyone has heard different arrangements, could you please post them?  The version that I heard was eclectic jazz, orchestra oriented.

The song "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" was song by Bill Frisell in the movie FINDING FORRESTER.  It was also sung in the scene from ER when Mark Green passed away.  And, I am having the song played at my husband's funeral as well recognizing a celebration of the life of "the greatest man we ever knew" my wonderful Papa who became the unfortunate victim of Alzheimer's Disease for the past 10 years.

It's lilting melody helps all to realize that David J is still alive and well with his spirit forever with us...as my husband he is the "pot of gold" at the end of the rainbow and now resides peacefully in God's Kingdom.

When I was growing up in the 50's and early 60's there was a version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" that played on our local rock and roll station. It was sung by a male Doo Wop group that featured a falsetto solo on the part that goes "way up high". I have been trying to find this version of the famous song for over 30 years and haven't had any luck. No one seems to remember it. Did I dream it?

There seems to be conflicting opinions about who actually sang this song. I believe IZ has a version very similar to the one in Finding Forrester, but on the soundtrack, a guy named Melvin Amina (never heard of him and can't find any CDs under his name) is credited with the version that rolls during the credits and Bill Frisell is listed for another instrumental version that occurs during the movie. It turns out that Melvin Amina plays guitar for the piece. Why he is listed as receiving the main credit? I am not sure, maybe he redid the song identical to IZ or something.

I recently got married in Hawaii (second marriage) and asked the musicians to play SOTR -- the Brother Iz version -- because it's my favorite song. A couple years ago, my daughter downloaded several versions of the song, burned them onto a CD and gave it to me for Christmas -- best present I have ever received! Another version I like: Ella Fitzgerald's.

I think the version of SOTR that was played when Dr. Mark Green (ER) died was done by a punk band (Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies) not Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.  Israel does the version at the end of 50 First Dates, but I am pretty sure the one in ER was a punk version.  Am I wrong?

Hey all, if you want to see nearly 30 renditions by different people, download iTunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes/) and go to the iTunes Music Store and type in the song title.

IZ does both the song mix of sotr/iaww, on facing the future, and the standalone sotr on along in iz world.

iTunes doesn't have an exhaustive list, but its a pretty big one.

Damn you all, it was Judy Garland in the Wizard of Oz.  She was 14 years old and blew the world away with her voice.  She didn't write it, it was written expressly for that movie way back when.  Give credit where credit is due to the greatest female voice the world has yet known.  P.S.  I bet Israel died of a heart attack.

I can't believe all the great information right next to completely contradictory misinformation!

First, the 50 First Dates version is Israel Kamakawiwo`ole.  End of story.  It's a traditional Hawaiian ukelele arrangement that is syncopated, so it sounds to non-musicians similar to reggae or "jamaican" music.  It's Hawaiian, though.

I did not see Finding Forrester, but several posters here suggest that Bill Frissell sung this song on the soundtrack.  I have to ask, is this a quiet, cracking voice or is it a singer's voice?  If it's the latter, I can assure you that it's not Bill Frissell.  He must've played an instrumental version on the soundtrack because Bill barely speaks in concert, let alone sings.  He is a master instrumentalist and works with great vocalists, but he does not sing.  In fact, he's quite shy when speaking between songs.  I know.  I've mixed sound for him.  Only once, but once was enough to know.

A quick Google search of "Finding Forrester song credits" yielded a page that lists the musicians (no vocalists) which reads like a Who's who of great instrumentalists.  Both Bill Frissell and Israel Kamakawiwo`ole are listed for their respective instruments.  Several other page results confirm that Iz's version ends Finding Forrester, Meet Joe Black, as well as 50 First Dates.

Judy Garland is, of course, the pioneering performer of the song. ALL the following versions (and there are more instances!) are identical - the song just happened to be used by several movies/TV shows: Meet Joe Black, Finding Forrester (awesome movie) and ER (Dr. Green's last episode).

My boyfriend and I watched 50 First Dates last night and we also loved the version of SOTR featured in the movie AND we also wondered where we had heard it before.  We both felt that it had been fairly recently that we saw it featured at the end of a movie as the credits were rolling, but I haven't seen Meet Joe Black, You've Got Mail or Finding Forrester recently.  Does anyone know of any other movies that have featured this song?  It is driving us crazy!

I am very happy to learn so much about this beautiful song. I still miss two appearances in recent films of SOTR: One is on celebrated Tim Burton's "Mars Attacks!" of 1997, but I do not know whos the singer. The last one is a reprise of that Wizard of Oz, you can hear in 2004 Kerry Conran's "Sky Captain and the world of tomorrow".
I hope this SOTR forum doesn't stop. Please go on and thank you all for every post.

The song in the movies (Finding Forrester, Meet Joe Black and 50 First Dates)& the television show(ER)had all vocals and ukulele by Israel Kamakawiwo‘ole. He is accompanied by Mel Amina (bass), Mike Muldoon (percussion).  This is according to the movie producers and verified by the families of the artists. Please put this question to rest now. thank you

If you wanna find the song for free try using kazaa and run an advanced search only filling in the album of Meet Joe Black (for the Bill Frisell version)but it will come under Israel Kamikawiwo ' Ole. or you can search the song name and download the 50-odd versions released since it was written for the Wizard of Oz and sung (most famous version) by Judy Garland. The meet Joe black is a cross between Louis Armstrong's wonderful world and Somewhere over the rainbow. You could probably find it at www.emp3world.com (don't use the search, doesn't work) ^_^

Wow... So much to say.
Somewhere Over the Rainbow - Music written some time between 1930 and 1935 by Harold Arlen (Feb 1905 to April 23, 1986)and lyrics by E.Y.Harburg (April 8, 1896 to March 5, 1981)and originally Sung by Judy Garland

65 years ago, On Feb. 29, 1940, at the Academy Award banquet held at the "Cocoanut Grove", it won the Academy Award for best song. Indeed, four years ago, when the Recording Industry Association of America chose the 365 songs of the 20th century, "Rainbow" came in first.

In the meantime, as a guitarist, my Favorite version is of course, by Bill Frizell. I heard it first when we went to see the movie Finding Forrester. The moment I got home, I downloaded it so I cold learn to play it.

In the meantime, PLEASE, PLEASE do yourself a favor and check out the version done by the late Eva Cassidy. The CD is "The Other Side" by Chuck Brown and Eva Cassidy (Liaison Records cbd02263). Her web site is:http://evacassidy.org/eva/

If you listen to it, please post your opinion!

In answer to the original question about the episode of er i'm pretty sure it was Iz who did that version, it would only make sense since the scene was set in HW. in regards to Joe black, i looked at the credits and it said Iz did that version as well, however it has the what a wonderful world reprise and many people have posted that T newman did the versions with the wonderful world mixed in it, so does that mean that Newman also just copied a different version of Iz's arrangement or what? Lastly on the etoys comercial although it was arranged in the style of Iz i don't think he actually gets credit for that one, the comercial needed a longer intro so i am fairly sure it was redone by some session studio musicians, also when you listen to the voice and humming it has a higher pitch than Iz. Any thoughts?

His version was recorded in the '70s. Had a band called the "BILLY THORPE AND THE AZTECS" and, believe me, these guys were really good. Did a great version of "Love Potion Number 9" as well as their own stuff. EXCELLENT BAND. Billy is still going strong today.

Sorry, I don't have an answer to that, but here's another question: does IZ only have one version of that song? I was checking online, and I see his Sotr/what a wonderful world medley, and another version, which is unplugged. before I by the CD, which ,in your opinion, is better, the unplugged, or the medley? And which one is used in 50 1st dates?

It may be that the version you heard was by Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs.  He was more hard rock but did a very nice version of SOTR nothing like the other stuff he was doing at the time.

Sorry, no answers to anyone else's questions...but  I have a question myself.  In around the late 1980's or early 1990's I acquired a cassette tape with a male singer, whose name escapes me, and along with all his other songs he sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". His rendition was fabulous. Note-range impeccable. I was living in Ontario,  Canada when the cassette came out, although I'm sure this guy was American and not much older than around 25. This is what I can remember: he was mid-20's, was white, (I don't mean that racially, only helpfully), added no fancy flair, (didn't need to), I think he went National, not sure. He wasn't country, classical, jazz, or rap...just plain beautiful singing. The other songs on this tape were equally well-sung and were mostly love songs. I have been looking for this artist and in particular this tape for 25+yrs.  Can anyone help me?

Hundreds of singers have recorded their own versions of "Over the Rainbow" , most notably by Patti LaBelle, Melissa Manchester, Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson, Linda Eder, Johnny Mathis, Jo Stafford, Doris Day, Martina McBride, Ella Fitzgerald, Olivia Newton-John, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Sarah Vaughan, Tony Bennett, and the late Eva Cassidy. Barbra Streisand, Eric Clapton, Kylie Minogue, and Garland's daughters Liza Minnelli and Lorna Luft have sung the song in concert. One of the most interesting versions was recorded by the late Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwo'olewhose medley of "Rainbow" and Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" was featured on the soundtrack of the films Meet Joe Black, Finding Forrester, and 50 First Dates. James Stewart memorably warbled a rendition while carrying a "drunk" Katharine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story. Even horror legend Vincent Price did a version in the film Dr. Phibes Rises Again.

British television comedian Kenny Everett sometimes did comedy segments that included the unique sound of a British police car siren and Everett singing the lyrics, "Behind me!" and "That's where you'll find me!"

The cover band Me First and the Gimme Gimmes covered the song for their 1999 album Are a Drag, and in the animated series The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Grey Delisle sang it as her character, Mandy. Guitarist Joe Satriani occasionally covers the song at his concerts.

I'll end the debate.   Bill Frisell is NOT the person everyone remembers as singing the beautiful, haunting Somewhere Over the Rainbow with the lovely ukelele as it's only instrument.   It IS Israel Kamakawiwo`ole who sings at the end of Finding Forrester and the song is featured in 50 First Dates.    Bill performs on the soundtrack for Finding Forrester but it is not his version that everyone remembers....Israel's voice gives me shivers.....   www.limewire.com and you'll find it and many more.

ISRAEL KAMAKAWIWO'OLE - FACING FUTURE

This 1993 CD is still one of the best-selling Hawaiian music recordings, due to the inclusion of the medley "Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World," which played in numerous movies and television shows including the season-ending episode of E.R., over the closing credits in the Anthony Hopkins/Brad Pitt hit film "Meet Joe Black" and the 30 second clip of it in a national e-Toys TV commercial. Bruddah Iz, who passed away in 1997, was more than just an entertainer, he is an icon for the ages, in the same pantheon as swimmer Duke Kahanamoku and fellow entertainer Gabby Pahinui.

Nationally and internationally the word was out about the pure idyllic recording of SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW by Israel. His music was being used in national television ads notably eToys, AT&T, & Sony, successful movies like MEET JOE BLACK, 50 FIRST DATES, and FINDING FORRESTER, television shows including ER and PARTY OF FIVE and mainstream magazines including People Magazine, Parade Magazine and TV Guide.

Looks like it's all about IZ!

Bill Frisell provides a languorous deconstruction of 'Over the Rainbow' on solo guitar and the same tune reappears in vocal form from Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, sandwiched around 'What a Wonderful World'. As for "Meet joy black" and "50 first dates", I believe there both performed by Israel.

The answer to the original question is Israel Kamakawiwo'ole
The Song has been sung by various artist. Such as Judy Garland(original Wizard of Oz singer) Faith Hill, Jewel, Celine Dion, Norah Jones, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole and most recently by Katherine McPhee Of American Idol(2006)

I liked Faith Hill's the best.

=) I'm really happy today, I've learn more than ever, i found this afternoon a compilation of some versions of SOTR available for free at " http://www.radioblogclub.com/open/103741/thomas_newman/Meet%20Joe%20Black%20-%20Thomas%20Newman%20-%20Somewhere%20Over%20The%20Rainbow "
You can't download, and there're some errors about singers but that's really not important to appreciate these songs.
You can find versions of:
  -Judy Garland(for sure+ Disney version)
-Israel Kamakawiwo'ole Meet Joe Black and Finding Forester)
  -Tony Bennett(Jazz Version)
  -Chat Baker
  -Tom Waits
  -Ray Charles
-Ella Fitzgerald(Jazz but with female voice)
-Placido Domingo(seems to be a really old version, as an opera. How magical!)
-George Michael(Pretty voice but don't like the rhythm of the sing)
-Erasure(beautiful at the beginning but quickly boring)
-Eva Cassidy(Wonderful, makes me wanna cry =')
  -Céline Dion(pretty good performance)
  -Selena(I didn't know this version, it's a kind of "slow"[ideal to kiss^^ lol])
-John Petrucci(electric rock guitar version)directly followed to your pleasure by
  -Joe Satriani(mmouah mouah mouah!![<=kisses])
  -Dream Theater(wasted)
  -Marusha(Techno version => +_+ SuxXx!!)
-NOFX(^^ 'm lovin' it. Takes me some years ago =p)
-Don't know who's the last singer, maybe Eva. Makes me feel so blue, so fine.. so sad at the same time. Maybe it's that, happiness

I wish you enjoy the time you'll passe listening those songs as i did.

=) Ciao.

PS: Excuse my english, I'm just a poor stupid french pupil which didn't work at school.

Israel Kamakawi'olesang SOTR in both "Meet Joe Black" and "Finding Forrester" films. Thomas Newman is the musical scorer for "Meet Joe Black" and he does not sing.

The one version that totally blew me away is Tori Amos from her "Hey Jupiter" ep.

Overall I like the versions of this song by Ella Fitzgerald, Israel Kamakawi'ole Tori Amos, Carrie Smith and especially Jevetta Steele (from the movie "Corrina Corrina").

I met Iz when I lived in St. Louis Heights just  up the hill from U. Manoa in 1990. He was huge and gentle like an elephant, with a soft reassuring voice as he consoled me about my problems as a new haole, not yet kamaaina status. "Remember when you are troubled, you are in the storm, and you can't see a way out. But after every storm, the clouds break... and there is always a rainbow my friend."

Perhaps better late than never (I just found this page years after the questions asked so maybe someone else may too.) While I agree the Bruddah IZ version sends chills down your sides and is definitive, another enjoyable version can be found on the 1973 Capricorn Records album # CP 0114 "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" by Livingston Taylor (James Taylor's kid brother) or on the 45 RRM single from that album, CPR 0032.

In The Wizard of Oz, Over the Rainbow, part of the song was cut from the film. An additional verse was to play when Dorothy was locked in a room in the witch's castle, helplessly awaiting death as the witch's hourglass ran out. A rehearsal recording of the song survives and was included in the Deluxe CD set. In that rendition, Dorothy weeps her way through it, unable to finish, concluding with a tear-filled, "I'm frightened, Auntie Em; I'm frightened!" Garland's tearful rendition of this extra verse was reportedly deemed so heart-wrenching that it was edited from the film, in order to spare young viewers from its powerful emotions, especially given the startling scene that immediately followed it.

Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo`ole  Brudda IZ, as he WAS affectionately known.
If you want some facts about one of the most famous and most beloved HAWAIIAN singers of all time come visit my page on IZ. I'm sure it will answer some of your questions. IZ single handedly brought Hawaiian music in the limelight, and made it visible on TV, radio and commercials worldwide. He is the most aired Hawaiian singer to date and no matter where you may live, chances are you have heard him.. NOT reggea...Hawaiian. The Giant man with the heart of a lamb.
May 1959-June 1997 Brudda IZ, as he was affectionately known, Hawaiian vocalist known to many simply as "IZ," Best Known As: Super-sized Hawaiian singer with his little ukulele, who's song "Over The Rainbow" was included in the soundtrack of the movie, Meet Joe Black and Finding Forrester and Made; starring Vince Vaughan and Jon
Favreau. January 29, 2001, America On Line (AOL) included information on IZ on their welcome screen, unheard of for a Hawaiian musician. Millions of AOL subscribers were introduced to IZ and his
music as they logged on-line. It played during Anthony Edwards' touching farewell performance on NBC's ER television series in 2002. Viewed by 50 million people. Following the exposure of IZ's music in ER, he was featured in People Magazine (30,000,000 circulation) and Parade Magazine (35,900,000 circulation and 77,600,000 readership). Also in 2002, IZ's music has been featured in the NBC series Providence slated to be a part of Fox's series Pasadena. Even today remains one of the top selling Hawaiian albums in the world.

I have some interesting Trivia regarding this song.  The song was initially recorded and was to be used on "The Wizard of Oz" film. At one point during the film's development, "Over The Rainbow" was considered for cutting from the film, because of some concerns that it would slow the pace of the film. Studio executives saw an advanced screening before it's release and thought it was disgraceful that an MGM star would be seen singing on a farm. For that reason, Over the Rainbow was cut from the film, but re-edited in at the last minute.  I believe the directors made that decision just days before it's official release.  A good decision indeed!  It won Oscars for best song and best original score.
