I was an aupair for 5 months, but then I quit the program. I am on the J1 visa. Am I able to find another job? Do I have to get a work permit? If so, how do I go about doing that?

Thank you

If you are on a J1 visa, and not sponserd my a government agency, you don't have the 2 year requirement! You can marry, and start the process!
