I want to scan a large family photo library into digital form picture by picture, for viewing, sharing across the web, printing, and for storing indefinitely.  What file format is best?  Thanks.

It's depend on what you will do with this photos. If you gonna just view/store/share - the best is JPEG with 80-100% quality setting, but if you gonna edit it, add effects, apply filters and etc. - it's better to use some looseles compressions or BMP at all and only after you edits save it as JPEG for further view/store/share.
