have a VW Cabrio 1995, the transmission fluid seems to leak...

have a VW Cabrio 1995, the transmission fluid seems to leak (overflow) after driving, especially after a longer trip, can leave quite a little puddle.  Smaller spots on small trips, after a bit, none.  The area under the hood which looks like a 6 cube block is full of fluid.  What is the cause of the overflow, what needs to be done?
