The domino theory was an American theory that claimed that if one country became communist, the other countries in the region would be at risk from communism (and might become communist) because of agitation from within the communist country. They used this theory to justify involvement in Greece and Turkey in 1947 and Korea, Vietnam and Laos in later years.

The domino theory is an American capitalist ideology that influenced the U.S foreign policy making in South East-Asia. It suggested that if one Asian country fell to monolithic communism, the surrounding countries would, like dominoes, also succumb to the imposition of communism and ultimately would result in global upheaval at the hands of communist nations. This theory culminated in U.S intervention in Vietnam through president Truman in October 1954 through his pledge of commitment to Diem's South Vietnamese Government. Consequentially, a new concept of 'containment' was introduce by the U.S government as a means of eliminating communism in the Indochina region.

The "Domino Theory" was first mentioned by US President Dwight Eisenhower during a press conference in 1954.  He said, simply:

"Finally, you have broader considerations that might follow what you would call the 'falling domino' principle. You have a row of dominoes set up, you knock over the first one, and what will happen to the last one is the certainty that it will go over very quickly. So you could have a beginning of a disintegration that would have the most profound influences. "

http://coursesa.matrix.msu.edu/~hst306/documents/domino.html

Notice that nothing was specifically said about *contiguous* countries being a necessary factor of the "domino theory," although because the context of that news conference was Indochina, it has apparently been presumed that Eisenhower meant contiguous states.

Fear of Third World states around the world becoming Communist was sparked by the fact that the USSR's COMINTERN was, indeed, during that period scoring an unbroken string of across the Third World.

The domino theory would have been more accurately called the "Momentum Theory"...it's not as though Eisenhower was particularly giving a thought-out theory of international politics.

At any rate, it was believed by US presidents from Eisenhower through Johnson that it was necessary to break the string of COMINTERN success, and the point they decided to break it was in Vietnam.

Actually, the Vietnam war in fact succeeded in that purpose.  The USSR was far more involved in the Vietnam war than most people realise, and their involvement brought the successes of COMINTERN to the end intended by the US.
