1995 lebaron convertible developed noise in the rear end...

1995 lebaron convertible  developed noise in the rear end clunking - repairman wants to repalce rear axle - this noise developed when a cover was replaced on the front axle a while ago.  84000 miles  He said the noise was coming from the rod between the wheels under the axle.  Can anyone hlep me because i need to know if this can be dangerous?
