Egyptians, as most ancient peoples believed that deads' souls went to the underworld. Egyptians thought they should be judged for what they did and (as I understand it) they tried to cheat the gods by swearing they had been just and honest.

The Nile flooded Egypt's fertile stripe regularly every year, bringing eroded stuff from Ethiopia (modern Sudan and Ethiopia) which enriched the soil. So it's been always said that Egypt is a gift from the Nile. But as floods were not always the same size, Egyptians had to work on regulating it - so they made up a channel for the exceeding water to go to lake ... (don't remember the name). This has been pointed by several historians to be the reason of the continuous centralization of Egypt (unlike Mesopotamia or other places), because they depended heavily on the centralized management of the Nile flooding.

Another important point relating to the Nile and its regular flooding is that of Egyptian astronomical knowledge, which was quite perfect. They actually had to be aware of the year's length to know exactly when the flood was going to come. Nevertheless I personally think ancient Western Europe as the source of most perfect astronomical knowledge before modern ages - though they didn't use writing they encoded that extremely accurate knowledge in many geometrical style codes that now have been finally deciphered . But this is another story.
