How to tell if a dog is pregnant

She will get bigger around 4-5 weeks if she is a small dog or 5-8 weeks along if she is a bigger breed dog. She will get lazier and lay around more. She may get sick and vomit or experience a temperament change. Around 6 weeks they tend to lose their appetite for awhile. They want smaller meals and urinate more due to the growing uterus squishing everything else. They dig and scratch as if making a nest for their pups. Around the last week their nipples fill up with milk. If your female went into heat and didn't get bred she might still show all these signs without being pregnant. To rule out this "false pregnancy" for cheap you can get a dog pregnancy test at the vet for $20-$30. If you don't have the money for that you just have to wait and see if she has pups 58-66 days prior to mating. You need to be with your dog as she has pups and call the vet if something goes wrong. If you don't it could result in death. Labor includes pain and often the dog looks like she needs help when she really doesn't and people end up trying to help and messing everything up so you need to know what to expect. To find out what to expect on the birth of pups go to: http://www.hilltopanimalhospital.com/reproduction.htm Good luck!

I know that was a bad answer about just going to the vet, it costs a lot of money. You can really tell if she is getting bigger, you can feel her ribs, boobs are bigger, funny attitude, peeing a lot, milk coming out of nipples(a few days before birth)

My Female pug, terrier mix breed at the end of Apr.. And its now around 13 days before I figure she should whelp. She is only slightly bigger in the belly now but she has milk comming in on her milk bags and has more bathroom breaks and attitude changes then I did when I was pregnant with my child. Could this be a false pregnancy or the real thing??

anwser with mating pitbull with a rott...NO..you should never mixed breds do this is against any kennel clubs rules and regulations. you want to keep the purity of every breed if everyone breeded any dog with any dog there wouldnt be pure breds...thats why you call it taking irresponsibility with owning a dog and breeding...dogs arent a money maker for responsible breeding..it should be done when there are buyers

You COULD breed a pit bull and Rotti.. but knowing both temperments, I would not. If you do though, the female should be the Rottweiler, due to size difference.

well i have heaps of stray dogs and sadly thet have mated and 3 out of 5 females have fallen pregnant. i found out by the fact that they are more lazy than usually and they all ended up having pups. i guess the only real way to know is if some little dogs come from the mums bum! another thing is they start peeing a whole lot more! so dodge those puddles!

The 'expensive' vet here (major Southern California city) charges $40 for the ultrasound to check for pregnancy. It really doesn't cost much -especially if your dog is at risk.

You CAN breed a Pit Bull and a Rottie, although I don't know why you'd want to create a mutt.
Breeding dogs is a HUGE responsibility and a great expense. I suggest everything think very carefully before they decide to breed any animal.

my dog hasn't been bred, not that I know of, she's only gotten out once in the past 6 weeks, and it was only for about 5maybe 10 minutes. Everyone thinks she's pregnant cause she's getting VERY big, and very mopey(which is very unusual) Do you think she's pregnant or just lonely. She went into heat for the 1st time after thanksgiving.

HI everyone, the question about the pitbull w/the rotty..yes they can breed, but it is not reccommened since they're not purebred. there is a lot of testing to do before you welp a litter. also about signs of dog pregnancy, here are a few i know, teats will swell, back area stay swollen after heat instead of going back down, dog will change temperment, maybe more loving, sleepy, anything different. at 22 days you can gently feel (called palpation) in the uterous for lumps...size varies..on a 40 lb dog at 22 days lumps will be size of pea, and 28 english walnut, and get to the size of a golf ball at near 34 days, then you can't tell after that because they become soft, and it will be obvious since she'll be fat..now sometimes they can have a false pregnancy. care of the female is just feeding a high quality food such as ( Black Gold Ultimate puppy food, Nutro High Energy, anything that is high of protein and fat...at least 20% fat, and 20% protein..if you can't afford high quality foods, feed your female her regular food and add a half can(for 40 lb dog) undiluted evaporated milk. also ground up egg shells provides good calcium. tablespoom corn oil,or bacon drippings. cottage cheese. anything of that sort will help with the health of mom and pups. just make sure she gets plenty of it...another big thing is lots and lots of water. exercise is needed, but not too stressful..a regular walk or two a day w/a little bit of jogging. playing fetch or tug o war..just not a lot of jumping around. i hope this helps, if you have any other questions about dogs pregnancy or welping or a dogs heat, email me at devinben3@yahoo.com and i will help you out..i'm a breeder.

her mood would change. She would sleep more and often pee a lot. She would eat more and toward the end she'll eat very less. In labor please do not touch the puppies she has to eat the sack off. Do not touch them until a day after but keep a close eye of them and have blankets for them.

My dog went through heat about 2 weeks ago. We did not have her breed with any dog, but we did leave her outside and there are some stray dogs around my neighborhood. I don't know if she is pregnant but her nipples are more apparent and larger than they normally are and my other dog never had this. Could this be a real pregnacy or am i just overreacting?

To FLASH...PLEASE do NOT allow a pitbull and Rottweiler to breed. Or any other animals until you become an experienced breeder. There are soo many homeless Rotts now that are being Euthanized daily because of people not knowing how to breed properly, thought it would be a "good way to make money". Or some other reason that they feel justifies bad breeding. This world has to many Mixed-Breeds already. Please do not contribute to this problem.

My dog has been laying around alot and digging around in the blankets. This morning it was really bothering me that she kept digging at the pillows and wouldn't relax. She's also laying around more-as if not making an effort to move around. She's more mellow then before. And milk is coming out of her utters. Is she pregnant. Because the only time she was around a boy dog was a while ago only for like 5 to 10 min. downstairs.

Sixteen days ago my mom found a dog on the side of the road who had been hit by a car. We have only had her in our care for the past 2 weeks. Now I'm not sure but I would think she would have miscarried her litter because of the accident if she in fact were pregnant, but over the days I have noticed some signs that other people have posted. She pees a lot, and she can get moody. She also seems lazy and her genital area and nipples look pronounced. A lot of these symptoms I know could be just effects of the trauma of the accident, and the assumed cracked pelvis observed by 3 vets. It would mean a lot if you could tell me your thoughts. The last thing that I want is for her to be pregnant AND have a pelvic injury.

Yes you can if you want you can breed any two breeds as long as the male is the smaller dog. A large breed male with a small breed female will kill her during birth if not before. I used to have a pittbull/chihuhua mix.

OK, A Dog is bigger in her waist area. You can tell if she is with child (bun in oven) by the way she walks- if she centers in the middle- or waddles. You also can feel the fetus(s) moving sometimes. Also, If your dog comes to you and says Mom im pregnant- If your dog does this don't cheer and be happy, call the local news, and get the heck out of there. Sometimes the milk won't drop until she has given birth, in other words, she will not lactate until after she has delivered the placenta. Thanks you'sguy's

You grab her around the waist and squeeze slightly. If she sucks in deeply she is not pregnant. If she sucks in slowly, but not to deep and her stomach feels hard, she is possibily preganat.

Well there is quite a few ways to tell if your dog is pregnant u can listen to her heart, Feel her nipples, if she is giving milk the best way is to take her to the vet though brcause then he can check if the puppies inside of her are heathy and growing correctly. I know all this how well because im vet.
