I apologize, in advance, if my question is not related because I had difficulty determining the fact in question. So, here goes -
With the considerable rise in gasoline costs, I to calculate a general ratio for rate of the number of additional pounds( 700 ) and decrease in fuel efficiency.  I don't work in shipping and obviously there could be a large number of random variables - but which factors would be the most reliable?   For example, I am driving 3,200 miles in a new moving truck, with an average cost of gasoline at $3/gallon and 10 miles per gallon.  For $300, would it be worth taking a stranger's 700 pounds of rocks because I have the extra room or would that extra weight cost more than $300 in increased fuel costs? (assuming we ignore subjective issues such as unloading and people involved)
