Go to Start....Programs....Accessories.....MSDOS/
Command Prompt.  At the prompt, type in "ping www.google.com".  If it replies "The request timed out", you are thouroghly protected behind a firewall (Some firewalls still allow this "ping" feature, which can be hazardous)

Have you downloaded any firewalls? if so load up the program and see if it is working, i recommend AVG anti-virus free edition. if not you should always have windows firewall on... althoe it is not very good. go START - Settings - Control panel - Windows firewall and it will tell you if the firewall is on or not.
