What size and type of wire should I use for a hot tub outlet?  Is 10 Ga. sufficient?

It depends on the size of the pump and how much voltage rating it has. There should be a ul listed voltage report on the pump motor, It also depends on the distance from the service panel to the outlet. The farther voltage travels the less voltage is passed on. That is why there is different sizes of cable. if it is less than 150 ft from your service panel you could get by on a 12A circuit and using a GFCI outlet since it will be near water, it will protect you from electrocution. If it is a 240 volt motor,you need to run 12/2 cable to your panel hooked to a 20 Amp double pole breaker, and make it a dedicated run. Hope I helped.

very good answer plank , I always put a ground rod near a pool or tub, just for extra safety.

If you have a hot tub with two pumps and a heater you probably need 6 gauge solid copper three wire from the panel box to the outside cut off which should be at least five feet from the tub. 8 guage solid copper three wire encased in 1 inch pvc conduit should be sufficient from the cut off to the tub.  If you have additional pumps or ozone you may require a four wire hook up
