Use a fixed length for your record sizes.
e.g, say a RECORD_LENGTH=200

Then the 0th record will be at 0 bytes in the file.
nth record will be at (n x RECORD_LENGTH) in the file.

You can use lseek() or fseek() to the specific location and then write only RECORD_LENGTH bytes in the file.
