I have a 10 month old JRT.  She is just starting to come in heat.  I have been told by my vet NOT TO BREED her the first time.  I have been told that they are not fully matured at this age and there could be some complications for her or the pups.  I have been told to wait til the second heat at least.  I have also been told it is approximately 21 days.  Seven coming in; seven in and seven going out.  I am not sure exactly WHAT that means though.  Good luck

my JRT is 13 months old i was told not to breed her till at least the 2nd to third heat. as she has yet reached a safe size in her hip area which means she would have to have a c-section.

Yes, do wait for the second heat. As for how long your dog will be in heat what Tammy was told is only an average. When a dog starts showing signs of heat she is going into heat but not quite in it yet. This stage can last from 1-17 days so a week is just and average. The time she is in heat can last from 1-21 days with the same average. Then she goes out of heat for a while. In this time period she may still bleed a little but normally won't allow males to breed her anymore. So the recommended thing to do is put a male and female together every other day from the first signs of heat to tell when she's ready, because you can't tell. Only she and the male can!!! Good luck!

How much bleeding should I expect during a heat cycle?  A few drops here and there or significant flow for a few days? How much mess is normal?  Are there products to help contain the mess?

Jack Resells stay in heat 6-10days 2 times a year. Jack Resells can start being in heat in 6 mouths but it is not good for your Jack Russell to became sexually active or became pregnant until the age of 1-2 years of age. Other wise your Jack Russell my die in giving birth because of how small the waist of Jack Resells are; making breeding a risk in the breeding of Jack Resells.

You DO NOT breed a female JRT untill she is ATLEAST 2 years old. Whatever would the need be to breed anyway? None. Unless of course your a disrepectful puppy mill runner/dog owner, or just someone who should not be allowed to have an animal. I mean, it is just sooo logical, isn't it? I have a female, lets breed her. Just for the hell of it, or to make money? Give it up. Some people are just disgusting and well.. just not THERE.

I have a 7 month old Jack Russell and I'm positive she's going to go into heat in the next week. Does anyone know generally how much the breed bleeds, is it enough to leave her with my mother who has a tile floor?

Hip hip hurray to all the Jack lovers out there!!! I just wanted to say and not with a judgamental attittude, that I have been reading over many of these questions on breeding your Jacks and Jacks in heat... I want to strongly recommend that asking a question like how long will my jack be pregnant for clearly shows that you are not yet ready to breed your dog. The best thing to do is wait until the 2nd or 3rd heat and by doing so you will have had enough time to well educate yourself on every aspect of breeding your dog. I strongly recommend this, as I have seen all to many times things going wrong with labour and dilivery in all breeds of dogs, being a vet tech has made me well aware of the in`s and the out`s of breeding. all to often people think "well, shes in heat lets have puppies", with drastic endings. like you I love my jack and wouldnt wish anything to go wrong with her or her puppies. Be careful and read, read, and read more. and a final note Vet Bills can be Hugh!!!when things do go right by nature.

This is an opinion from a Jack owner only.  I am not a vet.  My three year old Jack has averaged heat once a year.  I believe the number is every 6 months, however by my example it varies per animal.  Mine is in heat right now, and we are seeking a male to breed her (most of those around us have been fixed).

I have a question also.  I have heard that Jacks are not the most instinctive parents in the dog kingdom.  Does anyone have experience or advice about their mothering instincts?
